Bulgarians in Karbala under Highest Security Alert (5 Dead)
Politics: 1 January 2004, Thursday.
The situation in the Iraqi city of Karbala, which was hit by a deadly attack last Saturday, claiming the lives of five Bulgarian soldiers, continues to be tense, Bulgaria's Defense Ministry announced January 1.

<snip>

Additional measures to beef up security in the province have been taken.

The killed Bulgarian soldiers in Karbala were the country's first casualties among the 450 soldiers in the infantry battalion in Iraq. The bodies of the five dead servicemen were honoured at a ceremony in Sofia and buried in their home towns.

1. Sometimes we forget that other soldiers besides Americans are being
killed. Is there a web site honoring ALL those soldiers who have been killed?

2. I haven't seen one....
Your question makes me wonder about the 2,000 to 10,000 (depending on the source) civilians that have had their lives cut short by America's actions in this unjust war. They seem to be largely ignored as well and the numbers are staggering as they include so many children.

4. Check out this site
that lists all coalition casualties, gives a picture, home town, age and circumstances of death. http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003/iraq/forces/casualties/

5. Thanks for the link. People need to put faces with the numbers.
It's hard to reaf through it without really feeling the sorrow.

6. Thanks, I needed that.
Actually, I didn't need that. Sometimes, like now, I am almost in tears because of the devastation this administration has wreaked upon so many lives, all for oil and power.

3. Deployment to Iraq was not a popular decision by Sofia
Bulgaria wanted to sucker up to NATO by showing it was a good American puppet.

The Bulgarian government referred to Iraq as a "peacekeeping" mission.

Although the Karbala deaths have rallied the public and the oppositon parties around the government, it is only a matter of time before the old doubts about Iraq come to the fore again.
