At least 100 arrested in Myanmar: activists

BANGKOK (AFP) - At least 100 people have been detained over last week's anti-government protests in Myanmar, according to exiled dissidents who released a report Monday documenting the cases.

Most of the arrests were made in Myanmar's main city Yangon from August 21 to 25, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) said.

"I am sure those arrested are now being tortured by the junta," said Tate Naing, the secretary of AAPP and a former political prisoner.

That uprising, which initially began as a protest over Myanmar's harsh economic conditions, ended with soldiers firing into a crowd of students, killing hundreds if not thousands.

'Pro-democracy activists in Myanmar have staged further protests against government fuel price rises in a rare show of defiance against the ruling military.
Protests continued to spread beyond the main city of Yangon on Monday, with demonstrations in the towns of Bago and Mogok in the north of the country.

"Some USDA thugs are believed to have weapons hidden in their bags or in the trucks. They are watching out for the movement of the NLD members."'


USDA are "government supporters from the feared Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA)", who support the police in beating. They remind me of the fascist civil corps.
