Chertoff is likely to be nominated to succeed Gonzales.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Bush will likely nominate Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to replace Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General, senior administration officials told CNN Monday.

Chertoff, 53, previously sat on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which handles appeals from New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and the Virgin Islands.

Before becoming a judge, he was assistant attorney general in the Department of Justice's criminal division from 2001 to 2003.

Chertoff received his law degree from Harvard University and was a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice William H. Brennan Jr. in 1979 and 1980. He first stepped into a prosecutorial role as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York from 1983 to 1987.

7. Chertoff is unacceptable.

Chertoff was special counsel for the Senate Whitewater Committee studying allegations against the Clintons. he was the co-author of the USA PATRIOT Act. He did a very poor job with New Orleans after and before Katrina. He is a political insider for the Bush administration.

I hope people here at DU will call their Senators and let them know that Chertoff is not acceptable as the next AG.

His name is being floated out their to take the temperature of the nation and the Senate. Let's let them know that we are cold to such an idea - very cold.

What reason should Senators give for not confirming Chertoff? (besides the fact that he's a Bush toady and we all hate him?)

I mean really, when you look at it, he's already the head of the second largest cabinet-level agency in the U.S., and he actually has more experience than the Dungeonmaster when he started.

Don't get me wrong, I think he should be shot out of the water during confirmation hearings, but Senators voting against him need to have a reason besides 'partisan politics', because that's how a no vote is going to be painted.

they paint him as an incompetent because of Katrina and paint him as a Bush insider that can not bring credibility to the politicized justice department. He gives them a platform to talk about how the DoJ has become a political arm of the RNC and how no Bush insider can change that. The GOP will stand up and talk about him as a non-partisan but that is just fiction. Plus it is easy to take some of the more unconstitutional sections of the US PATRIOT Act and throw them at his feet and ask how the co-author of that document could be allowed to be the next AG.
