A motorcycle officer in the motorcade of President Bush died after being involved in an accident as the president headed to the Sunport this afternoon.

Bush had just finished headlining a $1,000 a plate fund raiser for Republican Senator Pete Domenici at the home of Los Ranchos Mayor Larry Abraham and was on his way to Air Force One.

Hoffman said the officer had been with the Rio Rancho police department since 2005 and worked with campus police at the University of New Mexico before...The officer had a wife and two teenage children, she said.....The crash occurred where the road at the airport goes into an underground parking garage, she said. Traffic was shut down after the crash, resulting in a bottleneck at the airport. Bush was in Albuquerque Monday morning for a fundraiser for Republican Sen. Pete Dominici before flying to Washington state later in the day.

Photographers and reporters in the presidential motorcade said the officer's motorcycle appeared to be nearly destroyed, and the officer was on the ground, being helped by an emergency medical technician.

"After growing up on re-runs of "Cops," I had some pre-conceived notions about what police officers deal with. The idea of riding along with a UNM police officer initially made me a little nervous. The waiver I had to sign to accept full responsibility if I was hurt or killed didn't help the jitters.

I was introduced to the officer assigned to take me on my ride-along, Germaine Casey. 28. Is there any info aboutwhat caused the crash? I think I've read

all the posts and reports, but I haven't seen anything other than a one liner that said the motorcycle was traveling fast at the time. I've known a lot of cyclists over the years, and many of them were cops. Speed is NOT usually the problem.
