2 Dead, 25 Hospitalized After Pileup During Sandstorm (California)

LANCASTER, Calif. -- Fifteen vehicles, including four big rigs, collided Tuesday in a highway pileup in the high desert north of Los Angeles in the midst of a blinding sandstorm.

CHP Officer Henry Ross said 25 people were transported to the hospital. At least two people were killed, according to Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Ron Haralson.

... The pileup was reported around 1:40 p.m. during a sandstorm whipped by winds gusting up to 55 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

... Like the rest of California, the Antelope Valley has been bone-dry this year, receiving less than 2 inches of rain. The dryness means dirt and sand are not packed down in the ground and are more likely to swirl in the face of strong winds.

Does anyone recall reading that? It's been years since I have, but it certainly grabbed my attention at the time. Lately, it seems to have a more and more timely message.
