Soyuz Craft Lands Short of Destination

By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV Associated Press Writer
MOSCOW Oct 21, 2007 (AP)

A Soyuz craft veered off its designated landing course
Sunday, coming down more than 200 miles short of its
original destination on the steppes of Kazakhstan. It
arrived safely, bringing two Russian cosmonauts and
Malaysia's first space traveler back to Earth,
officials said.

A computer glitch caused the landing capsule carrying
Russians Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov and
Malaysian Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor to end up about
210 miles west of the designated site near Arkalyk,
Kazakhstan, Russia's Mission Control spokesman Valery
Lyndin said.

The craft arrived at 6:36 EDT one minute ahead of
schedule and the crew was unharmed, he said.

Russian search and rescue teams quickly located the
craft, NASA reported on its Web site. It said all the
three crew members were feeling fine.

4. They're probably lucky it was only 200 miles
And they're extremely lucky they didn't land in water. Soyuz craft are designed to come down on land only.

5. they have landed those things in some interesting places,
in one case the cosmonauts had to fight off wild dogs for several hours until they were found after they came down god knows where.

I think they also landed one in the mountains in a blizzard some time in the 80's.

6. What a horror.
I can't imagine having been to outer space, only to come home and fight off wild dogs for several hours.

Travel is tough.

8. We are happy to know
that once the aliens with evil intentions come to Earth, the wild dogs will defend the Earth just as any other good earthling. :)

10. That's it. That's our defense.
I hadn't thought of it that way, but we have low tech defense against the extraterrestrials. :)

7. It could've been worse. They might've landed at the foot of the
59th Street Bridge in Manhattan and needed to fight off gangs of winos trying to clean their windshield!
