Front Page of Le Monde ...
Edited on Sun Jan-11-04 09:52 PM by oostevo
"George W. Bush est-il 'un aveugle entouré de sourds'?"

Translation: George W. Bush: is a "a blind man surrounded by deaf men"?

At least the French have picked up on this ...

1. isn't this a dupe of the paul o'neill story?
Glad you want to post more about the story, but I can't read french, and the story looks identical to what's already been posted.

3. I can read it
...and it is the same story that's been printed in the US press. 60 Minutes had his whole interview tonight, which didn't add much more to the mix except that he was fired for asking whether or not Bush's tax giveaways were wise or appropriately targeted (although I find this very hard to believe from O'Neil).

The second story was a real eye-opener for a lot of middle Americans who bothered to watch. It showed Indians being taught "American" accents and given "English" pseudonyms at those boiler room operations over there that are doing everything from tax preparation to IT customer service to medical transcription to radiology interpretation. I sincerely hope it woke them up. If not, we're going to have to get some 2x4 lumber to clock them between the eyes. Suburbia can kiss their nice, clean office jobs goodbye. They're following the manufacture of everything but convenience foods offshore.

7. The Outsourcing of support systems
bothered me more than the O'Neill story. I know everyone on this forum thinks the O'Neill story will stick, but it won't. The American Sheeple just don't care, as long as they can afford a SUV and get a cheap DVD player at Wal-Mart, they just don't care. The 'Liberal Media' will bury it, or there will be another terror alert. But this outsourcing, that may strike more of a chord with the American sheeple. I didn't know medical tests were being read in another country. Now they are trying to put radiologist out of work. After a while, no one's job will be safe. I have a question. Corporations are incorporating in Bermuda so as to not pay corporate taxes, they are receiving billions in tax cuts, they are outsourcing costing Americans jobs and now Bush wants to bring illegals legally into the country. Do American corporations and CEO's owe American workers anything? Whenever a major corporation is in trouble, they want a bailout with taxpayer dollars. Damn the Airlines! Didn't the American taxpayer give them a 15 billion dollar bailout, and they have the nerve to outsource jobs to India? Does anyone give a damn about the American worker?

4. My point
Is that the French media are covering it. That is significant, since most of the local media isn't.

8. The fact that something is being reported is itself news
In politics, and this is after all a political board, the amount of press, the press interpretation, whether a story has "legs," these are all things that matter as much as the "story" itself. I think it is significant to know how the foreign press is playing this story. I think its significant how various major american papers play this story. I don't mind, I actually like, seeing how different news outlets report the same story. I think the "dupe" rule is sometimes applied in a narrow and stupid manner that inhibits this kind of important information from being posted.

9. Not LBN... locking
As amusing as that headline is, this post doesn't really qualify as Latest Breaking News.

Please feel free to repost this in the General Discussion Forum, or you could add the link to one of the LBN Paul O'Neill threads.

Thanks!
