In Minnesota 3rd, Things Just Keep Getting More Interesting (rated a tossup)

Ever since Republican Rep. Jim Ramstad ’s surprise retirement announcement, the scramble has been on for Minnesota’s 3rd District House seat. Candidates have come and gone and, now, with another candidate in the race and endorsements heating up, the possible outcome is still tantalizingly unclear.

CQ Politics rates this race as No Clear Favorite.

Edina Mayor Jim Hovland, a former Republican, has joined leading candidate state Sen. Terri Bonoff and Iraq war veteran Ashwin Madia in the race for the Democratic endorsement. On the Republican side, state Rep. Erik Paulsen still has not officially announced his candidacy, although he is raising money and campaigning.

Madia has been endorsed by VoteVets.org, which helps elect veterans of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, but Bonoff has picked up endorsements from EMILY’S List and AFSCME Council 5, one of the state’s largest unions. EMILY’s list endorses Democratic women candidates who favor abortion rights. AFSCME endorsed Bonoff after reviewing all three Democrats, saying she was the “strongest pro-working family” candidate in the race.
