UK Guantanamo detainee near suicide after years of torture, doctors warn
Source: Independent UK

A British resident being held in Guantanamo Bay may be close to suicide after five years of captivity and torture at the hands of the Americans, the Foreign Secretary David Miliband has been warned in a medical report sent to the Government this week.

The report concludes that Binyam Mohamed, from Kensington, west London, is at the end of his "psychological tether" after guards at the US naval base in Cuba switched off the water supply to his cell when he began spreading his own faeces over the walls. Mr Mohamed is one of at least seven detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay who claim British residency. Three of the men are expected to be reunited with their families before Christmas after the Government successfully negotiated their release. But the Americans have made it clear that Mr Mohamed must remain in detention to face a military tribunal on charges of terrorism.

1. Remember the three 'suicides" a year or more ago? All hung in cages
with guards passing every 5 minutes.

I mourn for the country we thought we knew.

5. You would think that people would learn from the Holocaust
but we have to ask ourselves, do we have a neonazi regime in government? No other group would disregard all the conventions that were laid down after WW11.

9. Well, you and I have learned from history, but
apparently we've learned different lessons than these neonazi pricks.

I've always considered the Geneva Conventions and the Nuremberg Principles as 'gospel'. They are the epitome of true humanity, or they used to be...

11. It's so frustrating to watch the French, et al, revolting against the PTB.
I would weep from pure joy to see such passion evoked in the entire US republic.

13. Excellent statement, "America seems to have lost it's 'belly fire'".
The fire seems to exist more online than in actual life now, exceptions noted.

Heartbreaking indeed.

2. There is no such thing as suicide in Gitmo ...
... there is only MURDER by BushCo. Sometimes the truly desperate only assist in speeding the process of their own demise.

Dear God, may I live long enough to see the truly guilty pay for their crimes, and the truly innocent vindicated.

6. if in war conventions must be adhered to
prisoners of war are usually looked after decently in a democratic developed country. Besides President Bush says he doesn't torture so who is it in this government is doing the torturing?
