RACINE, Wis. (AP) - A medical examiner has determined that heroin killed an Army private on leave in Racine.

Twenty-year-old Tue Tran was found dead in an apartment Thanksgiving Day. He was a member of the 10th Mountain Division, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry and on leave from Iraq.

Tran was found dead along with 19-year-old Joseph Dumont. His toxicology tests are pending.

Racine County Medical Examiner Tom Terry says lab tests are still being done to determine whether the heroin was laced with anything.

'Coming Home: Soldiers and Drugs'

<snip>

They were prepared for war. They were prepared to die for their country. But Fort Carson soldiers say they weren't prepared to come home and fight a different battle -- addiction to illegal drugs.

Many of this country's bravest men and women who volunteered to defend America in a time of war have come home wounded -- physically and mentally -- and are turning to illicit drugs as they adjust to normal life, according to soldiers, health experts and advocates.

It isn't very easy to find booze over that way, but opium, heroin and even
ditch weed growing on the side of the road are everywhere....

5. In today's Stripes...
Officials say alcohol likely led to death of 25-year-old private

A soldier assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division died Sunday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center six days after being found unconscious in his barracks room, Army officials reported.

Pvt. Vincent V. Thomas, 25, a member of the 1st Battalion, 35th Armor Regiment, died of heart failure that appears to be connected to excessive alcohol consumption, according to unit commander Lt. Col. Rich Morales.

While an autopsy is being conducted to determine the precise cause of death, initial signs indicate that alcohol was a likely factor, Morales said.

Thomas and his fellow 1-35 soldiers had just completed a series of training exercises in Grafenwöhr in preparation for their 2008 deployment to Iraq.

4. reminds me of the Stuttgart general's driver who died of heroin overdose
If Stars & Stripes' search engine were decent, I'd supply the URL. The article didn't indicate whether the general's driver had served in Afghanistan or Iraq. It did say he was injecting himself behind his ankle.

Article was printed about three months ago.
