New virus threat for bank accounts
Source: Banking Times

Trojan Horse computer virus, nicknamed the ’silentbanker’, has become the latest online menace, and one of the most serious. The virus works by getting between users and their bank’s website, allowing the virus to empty accounts and ruin the finances of the unfortunate individual.

Downloading the virus can occur simply by browsing the internet, and both its downloading and operation is invisible. The first sign that something could be amiss could be notification from the bank.

Globally, hundreds of banks have been attacked by the virus, which works in a number of different languages and in a variety of countries. Symantec, the computer security firm, has described silentbanker as one of the most sophisticated pieces of virus software they have ever seen

4. Soooo, has Symantic found a block for it?
I have Symantic installed and at least so far, I've been happy with their efficiency. I haven't checked their site re this latest threat though. I HOPE they have it under control.

5. Sheeples keep buying that virus enabled OS from Microsoft.
Linux cannot have such a problem and it's free.

Here's a question for you. If you don't consider yourself Computer Literate does it matter what OS you are not Computer Literate on? And you get to hang with the cool kids on the computer block. Just say Ubuntu and the clerks show you the real deals in the store.

7. Linux is NOT immune. Nor is MacOS.
There is no such thing as a virus-proof computer system.

Viruses are showing up in larger numbers for Linux/BSD and MacOS systems. While most Microsoft systems are protected by anti-virus software, very few non-MS systems are, and malicious hackers are catching on. Thinking that non-Microsoft OSs are immune is a certain path to disaster.

If you run Linux or MacOS, use an anti-virus system.

And, yes, I'm a Linux user.

11. First check their repository with your built in software manager.
But the only Linux anti-virus I've seen is for scanning Window$ partitions because viruses on Linux are ineffectual.

14. Exactly. M$ viruses are just more prevalent, because hackers are targeting the OS ...
... with the biggest market share. (If you're going to write a virus, do you want to write one that will spread to 20 computers, or 20,000?)

There may be an argument over the relative security of the various desktop OSes, but none of them are immune.

8. Or you could use a Windows PC with a dash of common sense
Add a decent free on-access antivirus engine like avast! and you'll live happily forever after. Linux certainly has its place, but I am far from recommending any Linux distribution to my non-techie family and friends.

9. "far from recommending any Linux distribution to my non-techie family and friends"
I call FUD.
My non-techie wife and 10y old daughter took to it like a fish to water, and I recently put it on the parents pc after finding 2000+ infected files (w/av).

The only Linux anti-virus I've seen is for scanning M$ partitions.

16. Less likely to have the problem does not equal zero probability
If Linux gets more users, the situation could change for the worse, even with its superior security features.

6. Last Friday, Norton Symantec found Trojan Horse
It quarantined the virus. I haven't seen any damage to my bank account or anything wrong with my computer. Thanks for the additional info.
