Striking writers vote to go back to work
Source: MSNBC

LOS ANGELES - Striking Hollywood writers are going back to work.

The Writers Guild of America says its members voted Tuesday to end their devastating, three-month strike that brought the entertainment industry to a standstill.

Writers will go back to work Wednesday after voting in Beverly Hills and New York.

The union's board of directors approved a contract deal Sunday giving writers a share of the growing revenue from programs offered on the internet and other new media.

3. Not exactly.
Writers' residuals are going to be destroyed under this new contract.

A great resource is http://unitedhollywood.blogspot.com - lots of info there.

But IMHO, they will get royally screwed on ad-supported online streaming.

10. Ancillary business lost $2 BILLION dollars in the three months. I'd say this is victory
All the little people directly connected to Hollywood get their lives back.

11. Yep, thanks to the STUDIOS walking away from reasonable demands. Twice.
SAG's just going to strike in June anyway, there's no way they'll accept this residuals-destroying shit.

14. Let's hope the mutinationals learn the lesson
and stop the screen actors guild strike before it starts in June. To be clear, by stop I mean they offer a fair deal so that a strike is not necessary.

15. What I'm hoping...
What I'm hoping is that they've SEEN union solidarity, so they just won't try this shit again.
The studios can be quite dense, though, can't they?

16. the real deal is that the studios aren't studios
they are arms of multinational conglomerates. an atrophy in one arm doesn't kill the other arms, they have more leverage than any entities ever.

17. IMHO, Killing the Golden Globes did it.
They realized they could lose the Oscars and all that worldwide free publicity....that would have put losses in the billions.

Good.

First thing I did when I heard the strike was settled was watch an episode of Torchwood online. I haven't watched one show online since the WGA said don't.

19. Mindless TV and movies will resume!
Not a moment too soon, either. There's only so much Sudoku that a TV addict can solve before he says, "Fuggit, I want my 45 minutes of canned, stereotypical melodrama with 15 extra minutes of pharmaceutical and pizza ads!"

21. Please, there is a ton of quality drama and comedy on TV
It's not mindless at all -- cynicism tends to blind people to potential.

Or are tomato cans and string still the normal mode of entertainment in your house?
