Rep. Wexler sues in push for ballot printouts

Arguing that he's exhausted other options and that time is running out to ensure an accurate 2004 election, U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Boca Raton, turned to the courts Friday in his quest to require paper printouts from electronic voting machines.

In a lawsuit against Florida Secretary of State Glenda Hood and Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Theresa LePore, Wexler asked a judge to conclude that both officials are violating their duties to ensure votes are counted accurately.

Wexler's desired fix is a printed duplicate of all ballots cast on electronic voting machines used in Broward, Palm Beach and other Florida counties. He said such a paper trail is the only way to guarantee fair elections because it's the only way to conduct an accurate recount in a close race.

Wexler said he's long been concerned about the lack of a paper record for touch-screen machines, and his fears were confirmed by last week's special election for Florida House District 91 in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Ellyn Bogdanoff was declared the winner by 12 votes. Voting machines showed that 137 people who went to the polls that day cast no ballot even though it was the day's only election.

2. I second that Go Wexler!
Smart move indeed. If this election is going to be close again and I think it will they will try to steal it in Florida again and jebbie will cover for it again.

Lying, racist, cheating, whores.

10. Kerry made this an issue in the last debate.
He said that he was going to start litigation against any unverifiable (Liebold) voting machines BEFORE the election. He scored big points with me there.

Voting machines and corporate media are our biggest threats to the democratic process.

7. Good for Wexler!
Now where is his Democratic support?

Where's Alcee Hastings?

The party in Florida has to support his effort.

8. In Texas Congressman Randy Neugebauer wrote me and said
H.R. 2239 is very expensive and impractical. He also said the problem is that federally mandating these changes foreces every voting center to adhere to every change, no matter the cost, often creating a pricey proposal.

Of course this is a Republican asshole!

9. Just went to his website to take a good long gander at him
and found this dandy little poll, which sounds like something he may have had the pResident help him write:

1. Do you think the economy in improving?
Yes
No
Maybe

Yes, "Do you think the economy in improving?"

http://www.house.gov/neugebauer/

He seems just about stupid, and deceitful enough to be a great Republican!

Here he is with some other people. You'll have to guess which one is the gasbag:

don't get who these "election" officials are REALLY working for. They are blatantly violating their responsibilities to the People.

13. Wexler is a good man.
The Supreme Court claimed there should be uniformity in Florida. My Republican county has had touchscreens since I've lived here -- and they have paper trails. (Of course, the senior white male that took my ballot during the 2000 election came to my aid when the machine rejected it, and dropped it in the manual bin).

17. He's got to make this into a national cause celeb' . What's his website?
This is surely something the Dean people or other candidates campaigns can make an issue of.

It's also something a group like MoveOn.org ought to be championing.

Imo, with a little publicity, Wexler could raise a hell of a lot of money to support this effort.

Go Wexler!
