Prisident Bush: "Our economy has slowed".
Source: MSNBC. com

Consumers will give a boost by spending rebate checks, he adds

updated 8 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Friday that “it’s clear our economy has slowed” and tried to reassure an anxious public that the long-term outlook is good.

“Losing a job is painful and I know Americans are concerned about our economy. So am I,” Bush said during a hastily arranged White House appearance on the heels of a gloomy government economic report.

“I know this is a difficult time for our economy,” he said. “But we recognized the problem early and we provided the economy with a booster shot.”

21. The rebate will have no effect
A big majority of the people are planning on using it to pay existing debt or saving it.

Neither will provide a boost to the economy.

Bush can't erase the last 7 years. His "base" is fat and happy and everyone else is scrambling around, trying to decide of medical coverage is more important than food or heating their home.

8. And yet
For all the obvious bullshit of this pronouncement, MSNBC can't quite see their way clear to saying that Bush is just talking out his ass. Instead, they faithfully report every last syllable of the bullshit, pretending that it has some relation to reality, and never betray in the slightest that Bush is completely contradicting what he said just two days ago, or that there is any reason to treat this nonsense as less than oracular.

What a bunch of dicks.

12. By some estimates we may be headed into a recession,
or are already in one. Others suggest we may already be
headed out of a recession, which implies that we Were in
one sometime recently. If we average the opinions, we are
definitely in one, but there are a few at the far upper end
of the bell curve who just don't think so.
"Let them eat cake" or "Let them
use ethanol", they say.

since I already knew the answer. As I get older I have so little patience for the idiocy of some people in this country. Let's not forget that there were plenty of people who thought he was wonderful because he professed to be "religious". Or "he would be fun to have a beer with." I say professed, because I never believed for a moment that he was religious. It was all an act and those of us who were smart enough and wise enough to see through it had to suffer along with the idiots who voted for him.

34. We're in a recession? How about a depression and a
recession within it? These jobs aren't coming back any time soon either.

We have 2 big box stores closed and one on the way in my small town outside Chicago. The third box store was just built about six months ago. There are empty new apartments and condos nearby.

Business is struggling while huge homes $700K are going up in the area.

If people don't have good jobs with extra cash to spend they can't consume. That is Economics 101.

Whose earth are these "recession" humans living on? Have they seen the streets of bankrupt homes in Detroit? Or those whole towns falling in dis-repair?

Michael Moore talked about his Michigan town selling their trees to pay for services, etc.

Congress are idiots...and keep this idiot, lying, genocide King.

40. Parts of Detroit..
have been experiencing an economic depression for years. I hate that we focus so much attention on poverty in other countries and pretend it doesn't exist in out own back yard. Oprah claims impoverished Americans only want ipods and tennis shoes, meanwhile some parts of this country look as desperate as any third world nation. We cannot afford to build India and China's economy at the expense of our own, which is what has been happening for the past decade.

41. Oprah lives in denial land like many of our politicians.
Guess now that she is allowed to be rich (by the RW) she goes on like things are as they always have been.

For one of her shows, she and her best friend went to North Carolina to find men to date.

If you look at the sex numbers for the colleges in NC...most are women. Where are those men I thought? Where have they gone? They are in prisons just north of the Triangle area. There are six or seven in the area. (The US has more people in prison than any country in the world. That has to have great impact on our society.) Many are in military service because that's the only employment they can find. Or they work for Blackwater whose base in located in North Carolina.

Guess Oprah never thought about that! Is that Orwellian or what? Lots of great datable men in NC? Very few compared to the women, Oprah.

46. Well, I think that Oprah has a point, but it's not based upon needs
She had said that in impoverished third world nations the kids are desperate for an education, while in America poor children want tennis shoes and iPods. She's probably right about that; in America children are taught from a very young age that consuming is the ultimate goal in life, and that the stuff you own is a sign of your success. In poorer nations children are not bombarded with the excessive advertising our kids are, and they know that success can only come through knowledge and hard work. They have an entirely different view of what success is because it's measured so differently by their society (where nearly everyone struggles). There are plenty of places where people are every bit as poor here, but a great education isn't seen as the obvious answer to their problems. A lottery win, an "extreme makeover" home, or maybe a free iPod might be the first solutions mentioned by the youth there because they see so much affluence and excess on television.

Maybe in her world but not mine. Many of our families are living in poverty and those children go to bed hungry. If they have shelter for the night and a bed that is. If basic needs aren't satisfied you can't aim toward education, etc.(Maslows Laws of Needs).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs

The needy go to bed hungry and wanting yet they live in a country with billionaires like Oprah.

49. "Free trade" is a lie.
It's bankrupting us and ruining our democracy. Our enemies, and so called friends, buy up our Common Wealth and resources. They send us to war on lies for their own benefit, etc.

We should bring back tariffs and punish those corporations whose CEOs move their markets, technology (patent theft), and jobs over seas...or to Mexico and Canada. American consumers and workers built those corporations over the years. They do not belong to any international government or group. Trade is not negotiated by a President (and their trade person behind closed doors) but by the people and their representatives. They have destroyed our wealth and power. It is now a security issue.

We aren't doing good trade when the people have no say and lose their livelihood. It's called Fascism. It's bad government leadership and lawless since they are taking power not their's to give away.

45. No, W... its been plundered.
Remember the only sector that was "booming" when the economy slowed in 2002 was... the housing market. So pushing more rate cuts, pushing fed regulators to override local/state regulatory attempts to prevent predatory lending in the subprime markets, turning a blind eye to the enronesque accounting problems which uncovered ridiculous/absurd/DANGEROUS forms of leveraging debt with empty vehicles - leaving banks deeply exposed and thus allowing such practices to escalate rather than to be better monitored/regulated, all of that was PLUNDERING.

Now your policies have left the share of the federal debt for each American at over $31,000 (I believe it was about $18,000 in 2002) - has left the banking industry on a precarious precipes, have devastated our manufacturing/industrial base, has seen a great decrease in the household earning power (compared to increased costs of living), and a negative saving rate for individuals, institutions, and the government. Now you tell us "the economy is slowing?"

No George, why don't you call it as it is: "Mission Accomplished!"
