Crains New York BusinessDemocratic leaders insist the Spitzer scandal won’t derail their effort to control both houses in the state legislature.
Following a victory in a special election for an upstate seat last month, Democrats were only one vote shy of taking control of the Senate, assuming that Lt. Gov. David Paterson would break a tie vote. They will now need two votes since Republican Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno will exercise the lowers of the lieutenant governor if Mr. Paterson becomes governor.
Mr. Spitzer has been raising large amounts of money for Senate Democrats, but was no longer able to publicly campaign on their behalf even before the prostitution scandal because his approval rating had plummeted. Mr. Paterson, readying to complete a term with nearly three years remaining, will have the gravitas to continue filling the war chest.
“It doesn’t matter who it is, the governor is still the governor,” said state Sen. Diane Savino, D-Staten Island. “Fundraising for the state party of course will continue.”
