Dalai Lama to resign if violence worsens

By GAVIN RABINOWITZ, Associated Press Writer 14 minutes ago

DHARMSALA, India - The Dalai Lama threatened Tuesday to step down as leader of Tibet's government-in-exile if violence committed by Tibetans in his homeland spirals out of control.

The rioting prompted Premier Wen Jiabao to denounce the Dalai Lama's supporters as separatists and accuse them of instigating the violence in Tibet's capital of Lhasa. It was China's highest-level response to date to the unrest.

The Dalai Lama, speaking to reporters, urged his countrymen to show restraint.

He said that "if things become out of control" his "only option is to completely resign."

1. I didn't think that could be done.
Unless he's talking of simply dying.

5. His political office and his spiritual one are separate
"He would resign as the political leader and head of state, but not as the Dalai Lama. He will always be the Dalai Lama."

6. If you'd read the article you'd know they clarified the meaning, silly.
He's the political head of state of Tibet, which he's threatening to resign from, but he can't NOT be the Dalai Lama except in death, which he's not planning on doing anything to expedite.

2. as much as I respect the Dalai Lama
it's clear that his passive resistance isn't working so well with the Chinese.

4. Active resistance against the Chinese only results in death. Nothing good comes
from standing against a government that is willing to mass murder its own people. Especially if you are not one of its own people.

How many years after the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989 was it before things started to normalize for the Chinese people?

One might be willing to die on your feet rather than live on one's knees, but what about all the people who did not die. They, whether they participated or not, will pay the price.

I don't think there is any winning against the Chinese government, except, perhaps by total world condemnation and total boycott by the world of Chinese goods.

They do care about their economic standing in the world. But it would be a long, long boycott and the people of China and Tibet would suffer the most.

7. true...however
I doubt the Chinese could win a protracted guerrilla war, either.

Brutality by an occupier only feeds guerrilla movements. Could it overcome the Chinese government, though? Only if they managed to bleed the government to collapse, or inspire uprisings elsewhere.

9. They don't care about thier people, and they have plenty of those.
My guess is that the protracted guerrilla war would go on until all of the guerrillas were dead and all of their families too.

10.  Dalai Lama 'to resign' if violence worsens
Source: BBC

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- The Dalai Lama will step down as leader of Tibet's government-in-exile if violence by protesters in the region worsens, the exiled spiritual leader said Tuesday after China's premier blamed his supporters for the growing unrest.

"The Chinese prime minister accuses me of all these things I said," the Dalai Lama said.

"Absolutely not. Prime minister come here and investigate thoroughly all our files, or record my speeches. Then the prime minister will know how much is distorted by local officials."

However, he said he was concerned by the wave of violence in Tibet which erupted last Friday and has left an undetermined number of people dead.

11. Better Start Writing That Resignation Speech
This planet needs to be cleansed of the virus that is the human race.

People like the Dalai Lama are no longer relevant. WAR is where it's at these days. Peace is for wimps.
