Big shots aren't coddled at jail Vito Fossella may call home
Source: NY Daily News

Disgraced Rep. Vito Fossella is all but certain to go from the House to the Big House.

Prosecutors have vowed no deal for the two-timing GOP congressman, so unless he challenges the drunken driving charges against him and wins, he could find himself bedding down in a jail that has held a rogues' gallery of spies, terrorists and traitors.

Once in the Alexandria lockup, 9 miles from Capitol Hill, Fossella won't get any VIP perks.

"There is no special treatment," Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne told the Daily News last week. "There are no bonus points or upgrades because you're a congressman."

1. I have a Perfect Plan here
I know something that would (1) end Republican malfeasance once and for all and (2) get one of the most corrupt sheriffs in the industry OUT of the sheriffing business. And that's to reopen Alcatraz, throw all the Repuke evildoers into it whether they've been convicted of anything or not (on the grounds that "you know you did it" is good enough to grab some goat herder out of Afghanistan and waterboard him for the next five years, so it's fine for Republicans who we KNOW are criminals), and make Joe Arpaio warden.

It's a win-win for us all. It gets Republican criminals like Vito Fossella, Randy Cunningham and the entire Bush administration behind bars where they belong. It gives Maricopa County the chance to have a good sheriff. It gives Arpaio something constructive to do, and we can sell tickets to Alcatraz for twenty bucks a day--"go to scenic Alcatraz and laugh at the Repuke evildoers!"--to help pay off Bush's debt.

Besides, wouldn't you love to see Shrubbie on the cover of every magazine in America wearing a set of pink boxers? Especially when you know he'll die in them?

3. WHY are they talking jail time for this guy? I know the DUI is
a crime, but usually it's punishable by revoking your DL and paying a fine. And infidelity is a rotten, dishonest thing to do to your with and family, but you don't go to jail for that either!

4. you do if it's not your first DUI
IIRC after a couple DUIs now, you start going to jail. This is probably one of those times.
We also don't know what exactly he was doing at the time he was busted. Just the basics.

8. In Virginia, it's mandatory jail time..
if it's within five years of your first offense. If it's your third, and it's within five years, it's a mandatory 6 months in jail.

7. Back in the early 80's I received a DWI, I served 1 day in jail,
paid $100 fine and quit drinking.

I realized I could have easily killed or maimed others, and I was wrong. Even though I accepted my situation, I expected no "favors" or special treatment. I was bored to death, played cards, and slept. I will also never drive under the influence again. I met some interesting people in jail, the majority I would never call friends, but I did get to know different aspects of peoples lives. I felt that a few were there unjustly, but most, like me, had done something stupid.

However, it should be noted that I never had an affair w/a retired Colonel, I was never under investigation by the Federal Government for fraud and I am not a Republican hypocrite.

10. I have a friend who's been busted for 3 DWI's, always goes on the
wagon for a few months, then eventually backslides. He's very well-off though so never gets any jail time, just fines that are a minor inconvenience. He's also a Repuke :-(

Congrats to you for getting the message. Best of luck on your daily battle.

11. I have come to believe that a single occurrence, when there are
no injuries, should be a "wake up call", and treated as easily as possible, much like mine was; but when there are repeat offenses, the hammer should come down, and hard.

I know of one person here who has nine offenses, and had done 40 hours of Community Service...that's it, his license hasn't even been suspended, much less revoked. He has been before the same judge 8 of those times, and there are some serious questions in the community as to just how this individual has been able to stay out of jail of pay some hefty fines, much less retain his license...especially when the same judge has sentenced first time offenders to jail, and maxed out the fine, (one of which was to a defendent that was cited for driving his lawnmower under the influence, he was driving down the sidewalk to get to the local bar). Said judge is up for re-election in November, and there is a concerted effort to defeat him, (and the NE Supreme Court is looking closely at him. There was a scandal involving another judge in a Capital case where he was found to have manipulated and suppressed evidence, so all kinds of things are happening in NE courts these days).

In any case, driving while intoxicated is a serious offense, and at least a day in jail is well worth the time and expense if someone stops said behavior. Lives are at stake, and far too often, the drunk driver walks from the accident that killed an innocent, or an entire family of innocent victims.

13. By comparison, at least they look better than the DC police
IIRC, Rep. Patrick Kennedy crashed his car into a barrier and they gave him a ride home. I don't believe he was charged with anything.
