Democrats ready to unload on McCain, Reed over Atlanta fund-raiser
Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Wednesday, August 13, 2009

The signs are unmistakable, Democrats are about to unload on Republican presidential candidate John McCain
- and the upcoming Atlanta event that Ralph Reed is helping to boost.

Today's The Hill, a newspaper that covers Congress, notes that McCain has thus far ignored calls to cancel the
fund-raiser from "watchdog groups" who note Reed's former association with imprisoned lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

An investigation driven by McCain, as chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, uncovered much of the
relationship.

But Democrats are no longer much impressed. This paragraph is from The Hill:

"Calling yourself a maverick and claiming credit for fighting corruption while raising money with one of the central
figures in the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal is not what most voters have in mind when they think of 'straight
talk,'" said Damien LaVera, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee. "It is, however, one more example
of why John McCain is offering more of the same failed Republican leadership."

A statement just released this morning, again from the Democratic National Committee and its chairman Howard
Dean, is even stronger - and calls McCain's 2006 investigation of corruption less than thorough.

"Despite his shady ties to Abramoff, McCain never called Reed to testify before his committee. In fact, despite
acknowledging wrongdoing among his colleagues, McCain refused to investigate fellow Republicans in Congress,"
the press release states.

2. You would know the answer to this:
When McCain was a butterbar fuck-up in the Navy, how many master chiefs got their foot up his ass, at one time or another. Can a normal human count that high?

4. I've heard a few accounts
that mccain really was "that stupid" to not look to enlisted Khaki for leadership training as it was "recommended" they do the minute they get to their first duty station. No doubt because he knew it all. I used to piss off various and asundry wardroom denizens by letting them know that those in the hallowed goat locker considered any officer up to Lieutenant Commander as a junior officer.

Figure in Abramoff scandal raises money for McCain

By CHARLES BABINGTON – 19 minutes ago

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (AP) — A political strategist tied to the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal is helping raise money for John McCain, urging his fellow Georgia Republicans to attend a fundraiser for the presidential candidate in Atlanta. Ralph Reed, former director of the Christian Coalition, touted himself as a member of McCain's "Victory 2008 Team" in an e-mail that solicited donations on McCain's behalf. The Republican National Committee is hosting the fundraiser set for an Atlanta hotel on Aug. 18.

A House investigative committee in 2006 found that Reed interceded with the Bush White House to help some of Abramoff's clients. Reed's public relations firm also received $4.2 million from Abramoff to mobilize Christian voters to fight the opening of casinos that could compete with Abramoff's Indian tribe clients.

Reed later said he regretted the actions, which contributed to his 2006 Republican primary loss in a bid to be Georgia's lieutenant governor. Abramoff went to prison for conspiracy, mail fraud and tax evasion.
McCain led a Senate investigation into Abramoff's dealings with Indian tribes, which included information about his ties to Reed. McCain said in a November 2007 presidential debate: "I led in the Abramoff hearings in the, in the obscure Indian Affairs Committee, for which people are still testifying and going to jail."

On Wednesday, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean criticized what he called "McCain's decision to cozy up to one of the central figures in the Republican culture of corruption." Reed didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The McCain campaign referred questions to the Republican National Committee. RNC spokesman Alex Conant said, "It's laughable Democrats would try to make this a political issue, considering John McCain led the Abramoff investigations and has a record of fighting to reform Washington."

13. Ahh, been wonderin' where the "librul" media was.
As much as it hurts, I think the Abramhoff ammo is being saved until September/October (after the convention, at the very least) when it can do the most damage.

I still think the GOP is going to spring Romney on U.S. at the last minute. McCain is just too damaged, too lame, too horribly sad a character to sit in the WH - and they damn well know it.
