Time (Magazine) says McCain got testy
Source: USA Today/TIME Magazine

"McCain's prickly TIME interview." That's the headline this morning on Time magazine's report about its latest interview with Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Prickly? Read the Q&A and decide for yourself. Here's a taste of what it was like:

Time: "What do you want voters to know coming out of the Republican Convention -- about you, about your candidacy?"

McCain: "I'm prepared to be president of the United States, and I'll put my country first."

Time: "There's a theme that recurs in your books and your speeches, both about putting country first but also about honor. I wonder if you could define honor for us?"

McCain: "Read it in my books."

Time: "I've read your books."

McCain: "No, I'm not going to define it."

Time: "But honor in politics?"

McCain: "I defined it in five books. Read my books."

18. Yup
How many times have we read quotes by Republicans who have said he shouldn't be President...that they'd be scared to have him in control etc. If he were a Democrat, Karl Rove would be playing up his POW experience and tying it into his post traumatic stress issues - that he's not mentally fit etc. I'm not advocating that strategy, but I'm just sickened by the hypocrisy of all of this and how we keep dancing about "what a good guy he is". Bullshit. He's an asshole.

43. Sadly, that has not ever been invoked. We've had a president with a stroke (Wilson), Alzheimer's ...
... (Reagan), and most recently, George W. Bush (alcoholic-- repeatedly demonstrably drunk overseas).

The only way we'd get rid of McCain before the end of his term would be by death or resignation, if history is any indication.

51. Reagan's Alzheimer's was kept a secret until his presidency was over. nt
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 11:07 AM by zanne
It was never proven that he was afflicted with it while he was president. If John McCain blows up at a foreign dignitary, we'll have to get rid of him.

The online photos of Bush at the Olympics were shocking. He was shitfaced, and I don't say that lightly.

There have been no consequences for Bush at home -- in fact, no reporting or comment in the MSM. In later years we'll get some learned analysis in the MSM of how badly Bush deteriorated while in office, but for now they are complicit in the code of silence.

As for Reagan's Alzheimer's being kept a secret -- that is exactly my point. The extreme severity of Woodrow Wilson's stroke was also kept from the public, and some historians (and some in the know at the time) believe it was Mrs. Wilson who was running things by being his only intermediary.

A McCain presidency will be a rather grim proposition for the country, imo.

Hekate

30. To be honest, he didn't come off well at the bike rally
and that's not factoring in his offering Cindy to participate for the talent contest.

He comes off as shrill when he tries to be forceful and his "if I were president I'd be telling Congress to "get back to work."" sounded petulant vs. authoritative or commanding.

6. I can't wait for the presidential debates....
... I know they're a carefully orchestrated charade, but McCain is going to implode under the pressure.

Even if he's wired (as Bush was in 2004) for back-room prompting, he's not going to stay calm, measured and unruffled, as Sen. Obama will.

It'll be his final campaign 'tipping point'!

32. Here's the scoop, my Friend...
Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 03:19 PM by Octafish
McCain lost five U.S. Navy aircraft.

Source: Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain

Navy pilot John Sidney McCain III should have never been allowed to graduate from the U.S. Navy flight school. He was a below average student and a lousy pilot. Had his father and grandfather not been famous four star U.S. Navy admirals, McCain III would have never been allowed in the cockpit of a military aircraft.

His father John S. "Junior" McCain was commander of U.S. forces in Europe later becoming commander of American forces in Vietnam while McCain III was being held prisoner of war. McCain III's grandfather John S. McCain, Sr. commanded naval aviation at the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

During his relative short stunt on flight status, McCain III lost five U.S. Navy aircraft, four in accidents and one in combat.

Robert Timberg, author of The Nightingale's Song, a book about Annapolis graduates and their tours in Vietnam, wrote that McCain "learned to fly at Pensacola, though his performance was below par, at best good enough to get by. He liked flying, but didn't love it."

McCain III lost jet number one in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while practicing landings. He was knocked unconscious by the impact coming to as the plane settled to the bottom.

14. It's the anger of a man who sold his 'honor' to the highest bidder.
Most politicians are full of themselves - champing at the bit to pontificate about their virtues. McCain bridles - talking about honor is now a trick question. Says it all for me.

25. If he wants voters to read his books to find out what he means by honor
he's pretty much limiting his constituency. After all, people who read books are probably already voting Obama. Not to be confused with rich wingnut foundations who buy stacks of Corsi screeds to give away to people who won't read them.

problem. It should be a no-brainer. For example, I teach and when anyone asks why do I teach ( and wants a quick, feel-good answer), it is a no-brainer: - open mouth - pop in tape. I mean it and all, but the real reasons are complex and nuanced, so I have a canned answer ready to go.

McMuffit should have canned answers to about 10 or twelve of these terms ( honor, freedom, duty, America). That he got so bent out of shape suggests one of ( at least) two things: A) In his book he said some very specific things about honor and something in terms of how he is acting now violates that ( otherwise he would just spew some canned answer); B) he is really gettin spacey, forgot and knew he should not have forgotten.

I'm going with he is violating his own definition of honor.

It's just more of the same. They've bankrupted the economy, and not even their rich friends want to save them this time.

My worst fear is that he will implode before the election and they'll get to field someone else instead, stealth attack from someone far better able to challenge Obama. The only thing that keeps me sane is that there doesn't appear to be ANYONE on the rethug side of the fence who fits the bill.
