Palin says Iraq war is 'task from God'
Source: UPI

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Likely Republican U.S. vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin told her church congregation that the Iraq war was part of God's plan, a videotape revealed.

A 14-minute video of a speech the Alaska governor delivered in June to the Wasilla, Alaska, Assembly of God Church and posted Tuesday on the Huffington Post Web site showed her saying the United States' involvement in Iraq is "a task that is from God."

She is seen saying: "Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending (troops) out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

In the speech, she tells the congregation that building a long-sought, 1,715-mile natural gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Alberta, Canada, is also part of God's plan.

23. Appalling
Ann Kilkenny, a Democrat who said she attended every City Council meeting in Palin's first year in office, said Palin brought up the idea of banning some books at a council meeting. "They were somehow morally or socially objectionable to her," Kilkenny said.

The librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, pledged to "resist all efforts at censorship," Kilkenny recalled. The mayor fired Emmons shortly after taking office but rescinded the termination after residents made a strong show of support. Emmons, who left her job and Wasilla a couple of years later, declined to comment for this article.

So they found this gal to be their Jesus whore this election. And of course the fundies are fawning all over here.

I have to ask if Obama had a daughter that was knocked up you know these same people would be throwing at all kinds of bile. What happened to the effectiveness of the Pub's abstinence programs, did daddy forget to take her to the chastity ball? Or is the whole family a bunch of whores.

The intellectual dishonesty that has become the Republican party is just astounding.

44. Nowhere, inshallah.
God willing, nobody would ever speak like that.

For those who believe that Jesus intervenes in their life, vacations, jobs, projects, and just about everything else is part of God's plan. And we're to pray that our plans match God's plans.

It's not just the words. It's the semiotics.

I don't use "God" except in a referential sort of way. No "God damn", no "Jesus Christ!" as swear words or words of shock and surprise. And would I really want to ask God to send somebody or something to spend eternity in hellfire, just because they cut me off and I lost *my* temper, or didn't hit a nail right and want the hammer to pay for eternity? I think not, even were I to believe in hell. I don't say "God bless you" when you sneeze, I say "excuse me" when I sneeze and "Gesundheit" when others sneeze. I say "thank God" when I seriously want to thank God; not something I've done much of in recent memory.

I took Arabic, and many Arabs have "alhamdulillah" and "inshallah" dripping off their lips every other sentence. We were expected to internalize this usage to be communicatively competent and culturally competent. Somebody complained, and the teacher said the religious and irreligious do it--it's just a verbal tic for many people, and expected in many instances. "Do it, and it's only meaning is that you're behaving appropriately in a conversation. Don't do it, and you sound like you're trying to be weird." "Cultural competence" is something that needs to have more attention paid to it. Unless you're culturally competent, what's said by the Other is going to be misinterpreted and misunderstood through your own cultural centrism.

Both sides do it, in equal measure. Some on both sides assume they're justified in doing it, they and only they are right. I've been on both sides many times--repub and dem friends, atheist and fundie friends, cold-warriors and fellow-travellers--and watched people do it to others and have it done to them, and I've been on the receiving end from numerous sets of diametrically opposed sets of morons. On the same day. On the same issue. Bad news, all around. It's one reason I like being a translator and linguist. It's fun to watch how utterances change meaning in context, to learn new systems of signification and discourse, and see how it's butt-obvious when you know the system what somebody means given the context and discourse, but most people, even those who claim to be native speakers, can't be bothered to summon up the effort to try to understand. Seldom is a conversation boring, you can always focus on the dysfluency and dysfunction.

She should take a lesson from what happened to Dobson and his crew- he called for prayers for rain to disrupt the Democratic convention, and it was sunny, warm, and crowded with supporters. On the other hand, the REPUBLICAN convention was hit with a hurricane. I still haven't heard any word of how he spun that one...

I don't see truly believing fundamentalists like Amish taking up the sword to conquer foreign lands - their fundament is safe and sound.

It is only the doubting pseudofundies like evangelicals and salafis who hoard material riches who are eager to take up the sword to die by the sword.

29. This doesn't make sense.
What Sarah Palin says doesn't make sense to anyone with a brain, regardless of how religious they are.

Christianity (this means Catholics, the various Protestants, and Mormons), Judaism, and Islam, all believe in God. The *> SAME <* God.

The Iraq War is a "task from God" ?

Uh..... so God sent one group of followers to another place to kill another group of his followers?

In the Holy Bible, whenever God wanted a group of people wiped out, did he send a group of people to do it, or did he just do it himself?

What, did he suddenly lose his omnipotence in 2000 years and decided it would be less effort for 200,000 people to uproot themselves for years and go kill another 100,000 people in his honor?

Yeah, ok. Good luck with that. :sarcasm:

35. it's not without "precedent"
> In the Holy Bible, whenever God wanted a group of people wiped out,
> did he send a group of people to do it, or did he just do it himself?

He's been known to do both. Smites cities, drowns armies, plagues of locusts and whatnot, but occasionally tells the Hebrews to massacre some tribe or other on a whim. Read the Old Testament, there's some truly nasty stuff in there pertaining to the treatment of civilians. Anyone who thinks the OT God cared about babies and the unborn needs to read up on what happened to the Amorites, Amalekites, and various other peoples who did things differently or had lands in which the "chosen people" wished to settle.

The scary thing is, some people still firmly believe such a genocidal deity deserves their devoted worship and praise.

46. Palin: Iraq War 'a task from God'
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 07:17 PM by Suji to Seoul
Source: AP

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."

In an address last June, the Republican vice presidential candidate also urged ministry students to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it "God's will."

Palin asked the students to pray for the troops in Iraq, and noted that her eldest son, Track, was expected to be deployed there.

"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan."

51. Someone please stop this woman
Dear Sarah Palin:

The greatest love of my life served with honor in the Marine Corps and was being recalled for his THIRD tour in the Middle East weeks before he was killed in a car accident. He was proud to serve as a Lance Corporal, did a tour in Afghanistan, was in the Battle of Falluija (sp?), served his four years of active duty thinking he would never have to return to a war that made a strong man afraid of lightening because it reminded him of bombs.

Sarah Palin, I don't believe that if Chris were alive today that he would agree with you. How dare you make such statements when you've never served a day of military service in your life.

Sarah, I really wish you'd shut up about things you are clueless about. Statements like yours are what are going to lead us into World War III where religious fundamentalists believe the US is out to convert everyone to Christianity. Just stop already and go back to teaching abstinence to your children. Clearly you've done a spectacular job with that.

54. Misleading article!
Here's an exact transcription of what she said at that point:

Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right also for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God, that's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan.

Asking folks to pray that a plan be God-approved is quite different from saying it is God-approved.

63. This woman is dangerous and just plain batshit crazy.
I think I'll go hide on some island in the South Pacific if her & McCain get elected. She will take us to war with Iran, Venezuela, China, and Russia. I worry most about the last two because they would probably nuke us if they McCain/Palin launched a preemptive war..

68. Which is why those in power always support some form of religion
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 10:08 AM by panzerfaust

If the Gods did not exist, we would have to create them.
- Truly do not recall who first wrote this (Greek, I think)

Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich.
- Napoleon

When did I realize I was God?
Well, I was praying and I suddenly realized I was talking to myself.
- Peter O’Toole
