1. There are more people WITHOUT cable than there are WITH cable.
Whenever the truth leaks out onto the Networks and gets broadcast into living rooms across the Country, we win!

I sent a nice thank you atta boy sort of letter to NBC. It's no good hollering when they're silent if we don't speak up when they get something right.

4. Brian Williams is the BEST @ NBC
Brian Williams deserves all the credit because he decides what gets covered on his show. I was MSNBC's number one fan from Morning Joe to K.O. to Super Tuesday but after their convention coverage I put them down.
Brian Williams was the ONLY one who showed journalistic integrity while covering both conventions. He is always impartial and sticks to the facts all the others at NBC need to take notes.

P.S. K.O. & R.M. get a pass because left or right they have facts to back up why they formed their opinions. They don't pretend to be impartial and they don't care if you are democrat or republican a lie is a lie.

Because you asked and truth be told, I DID remember seeing the Giant Head of Ted Koppel, I ended up looking and found that both have indeed played the part.

Here is a link to Koppel Giant Head: http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=88743&title=giant-head-of-ted-koppel

Another link of Giant Head featuring Brian Williams: http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=85077&title=Giant-Head-of-Brian-Williams

Here is an interesting link where Brian Williams tells Jon Stewert he needs more giant head: http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=88814&title=Brian-Williams

And finally the link to Giant Heads who have appeared on Jon Stewert to include Ted Koppel; Brian Williams; Robert Loggia and Bruce Willis: http://www.thedailyshow.com/tagSearchResults.jhtml?term=giant+head

Better to pay attention to politics than think about what's going to happen to our boys in Aqua and Orange on Sunday.

30. I agree......
I don't usually watch NBC, mainly because I don't think to turn it on. I'm usually watching MSNBC.

I remember during Katrina, he was in the Superdome and I remember the way he spoke so passionately about what happened there. And that was when I really started to notice him.

NBC made a great choice when they replaced Brokaw with Williams.

Thanks for the video........I emailed him too.

8.  Thanks for sending them that letter hay rick
I agree on both of your points. My letter reflected that democracy REQUIRES an informed electorate and that most of that electorate had been reduced to getting informed online. I thanked them for leading the charge on regaining the electorate's viewership on television. If they keep this up they will indeed be leading that charge ya know! They need to fact check both candidates, their VP's and their campaigns-they need to do this constantly. If they do this, NBC NEWS will gain the lions-share of those who get their news from TV AND online!

13. compulsive lairs
I was married to a compulsive lair for 14 years and I'll tell you "It's an adventure". It is an illness the same as drug addiction or alcoholism. I have heard her tell a lie when the truth would have worked better. They seem to live in another universe than normal people do. After a couple years you can really believe just the opposite and you will be correct 90% of the time. Being the life of the party and head bragger is very important to them. If you don't know how wonderful they are just wait they'll tell you.

I sent them a note also, but I noticed one of their other videos a reference to "Regan democrats". I wish we could debunk that notion,as IMHO there is no such thing as a Reagan dem. No one who voted for that impostor was a true dem. Uninformed, uninterested, and easily swayed, those who did were either never dems. or just plain stupid. I am a retired construction and had many arguments about it at the time, still can't figure how so many were fooled, and so many still seem susceptible to their bs.

20. I sent them a "thank you" too.
The text:

"Thank you very much for your segment entitled "Fact Checking Sarah Palin".

Dishonesty in American politics has become an epidemic. The media is in part responsible for this. Too often, they read government/candidate press releases as "news" without analysis. They focus on the horse-race in exclusion of the issues. They accept misstatements and outright lies without blinking.

By actually calling out a vice-presidential candidate on her repeated lies, you are fulfilling your function as the Fourth Estate and making our democracy a little bit healthier. Some may complain about your attacks, but don't be discouraged; the Truth can never be a partisan attack.

Thanks for restoring my faith in the media a little.

Now do it a million times."

22. Beautiful and to the point
mine was...well I am not a great writer of my thoughts, I feel strongly about what I feel though:

"Re: The Palin Fact Check Piece:
WAY TO GO NBC!!!!! The blogosphere is all over this right now, please get a link out there for us to read or view ASAP. I'd like to add: Democracy REQUIRES an informed electorate-the MSM has been woefully inadequate as of late in keeping the electorate informed. Millions, likely hundreds of millions of Americans are getting their news online now because of this. If you want us to flock to NBC for our news, break away from the pack-provide us with the REAL news-the news that will influence our decision making. You will quite literally resuscitate our failing democracy should you do this. A grateful America will not be quick to forget the news-service who does this for us. Be the leader you can be-everyone else in the Main Stream Media will be in a footrace to catch up. You know my words are true. Thank you again for the Palin piece."

They replied with an interesting form-letter:

Perhaps, if enough of us let them know our thoughts of gratitude, it might make a difference. All things considered this might be a good time to point out to them how hungry We The People are for real news right now! IMO, if they chose to break ranks and do REAL investigative reporting regarding all things political they could leap head and shoulders above everyone else in the ratings.

27. I sent off an email
Hi, I'm new to posting but have been reading on and off for quite a while.

Tonight I sent this email to MS-NBC:

Thank you for starting to report the news and not just the released statements from the campaigns.

Next question: Why aren’t candidates availing themselves to the press and having an open dialog? Are they afraid of too close of an inspection? There is too much of the wizard oz effect going on with the man behind the curtain creating the distractions.

Please keep up the investigative reporting. It’s about time that the media started acting like journalists and reporters instead of readers of scripts. You have a responsibility in a free society to keep the citizens informed and not just read propaganda.

____

Just had the form letter reply pop into my mailbox.

I hope the MSM keeps it up.

41. Right On and Welcome to the DU
Your sentence: "There is too much of the wizard (of) oz effect going on with the man behind the curtain creating the distractions."-is spot on but this: "You have a responsibility in a free society to keep the citizens informed and not just read propaganda"-can't be said enough! Democracy REQUIRES an informed electorate. Thanks to the internet, a great many are getting their primary news here and thanks to that Wizard of Oz phenomenon there is precious little news to be gleaned from TV. I sorta pointed this out as well in my e-mail to them.

I know it is pie-in-the-sky thinking on my part but wouldn't it be grand if in some NBC boardroom, with thoughts of a dramatic stock plunge in their minds, there are 'powers that be' re-thinking their future as possible leaders in REAL INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING! The boon to their advertisers would be....-well exciting to say the least. Every other news service would be stuck in the position of imitators at that point and be regarded as only somewhat better than FOX NOISE in comparison.

That's a powerful carrot I am sure someone is thinking about. The popularity of Kieth Olbermann and recently added Rachel Maddow fuels my own speculations along these lines.

Welcome again to the Big DU, here's to you Doodler71 :toast:

45. Just watched it.... This is my first exposure to John Fund
To be honest, he felt an awful lot like a republican shill. I say this because: recently a "committee" (for want of a better word) of 2000 doctors has petitioned to McCain to release his medical records. McCain's reluctance so far to release them suggests that he is hiding something. McCain appears to be having health related issues on camera-memory loss and perhaps a growth on the left side of his face which appears to be getting larger, maybe a re-occurrence of that cancer? Senator Obama, otoh, has been struggling with cigarettes but other than that appears quite healthy, quite vital.

John Fund in that interview stated that Senator McCain has released a thousand(s?) of page(s?) regarding his medical records while Senator Obama only released a single page! Doesn't that seem a bit of partisan distracting? Something a shill might say as a backward way of building up McCain's questionable health, downplaying McCain's secrecy while questioning Obama's health and his transparency??? There were other examples in Fund's turns at the mic too.

I am not so sure about that Fund character from what little I have seen of him here...I would suggest that Chris Mathews and the other guy in that interview, (from Mother Jones Press or some-such-I forget his name, don't know him either) had better journalistic integrity.

47. Not sure about our taking credit for this but who knows....
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 06:50 AM by chknltl
...maybe this could be the start of something good and we are witness to it. OTOH perhaps our modest efforts did indeed get through to someone at NBC. We may never know but one thing is certain: a lot of positive feedback can have an influence. I suggest that we encourage folks to keep letting NBC know when they have earned a thumbs-up and why on those days that they do stuff like this. I, for one will be watching tonights broadcast-not a normal thing for me to be doing at 6 PM, well not for many years that is.

I hope that Daily Kos did a story about NBC's piece on Palin too. The more the merrier and the better our chances are on influencing a major network with our collective encouragements. If even one member of the MSM breaks to doing hard hitting investigative reporting that actually is informing the electorate on matters of real importance...well that would be the straw that broke the camel's back now wouldn't it. The electorate would flock to such a station in droves I think. The crooks which have hijacked our nation would then be exposed by the news...We The People would have our country back! (If one is gonna dream, may as well dream big!)

On edit: between two or three threads on this topic I counted about 20 e-mails from us DUers to NBC. A good start I would say.

50. Thanks for sending out that e-mail.
Yeah-definitely jaw dropping. Some have suggested that it was because Palin snubbed NBC for an interview. If so, it's game on from here on out and our encouraging NBC with our e-mails is only fueling the fire against Palin imo.

52. Palin knows more about energy than anyone else.
Interesting accolade, Here is a dilemma:

Can I take her to petroleum engineering school?

OR is it better I take her to "Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader" to battle on the geology topic?

58. Hooray- May I send it off far and wide?
Jon Stewert, Ed Shultz, Rachel Maddow, Randi Rhodes, Joe Biden, SNL*, and etc.
*What a lovely SNL skit: Sarah Palin goes up against a bunch of 5th graders-gets beat by one of the kids then has the kid removed from the show!

54. This needs to be a meme out there right now IMO
With your permission, I'd like to send this out to a bunch of places. It could and should easily be on the Daily Show or in a Jay Leno monologue...it's short and sweet, it would be something Joe Biden could even say!

Of course I will feel like a total idiot* if this line's been going around the blogosphere for the last 48 hours and I am that last guy on earth who hadn't heard it yet!
(*please note my name: I chose it for a damned good reason.)
