Obama has 13-point Michigan lead over McCain; Momentum swings to Obama in almost every demographic
Source: Detroit Free Press.

A week of economic crisis in Washington and on Wall Street has been very, very good for Barack Obama – at least in Michigan.

The Detroit Free Press/Local 4 Michigan Poll shows the Democratic senator from Illinois with a commanding lead of 13 points over Republican John McCain in the presidential race. Obama’s lead of 51% to 38% in the poll is nearly double the edge he had a month ago in a Michigan Poll taken just before the Democratic convention in Denver.

The poll showed momentum swinging clearly to Obama in almost every demographic. Among women, his lead is now 54%-35% -- eight points better than it was a month ago, before the Democratic and Republican national conventions and McCain’s selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. Among independents, Obama enjoys a 14-point lead.

As for what’s driving it – it’s the economy.

This is incredibly good news.

1. that seems a little high to me....
538.com is showing three polls with TIE, Obama +8 and Obama +10. So he's doing very well.... but +13 seems high.

5. Maybe not
Remember that the midia's job is to try to make this seem like a horse race so they can sell advertising. They fake up polls by asking more republicans than democrats or other shenanigans to reach that magical 50/50 to keep people interested.

It only makes sense that Obama have a commanding lead. 80% of the country thinks the country is going in the wrong direction with bush.

10. Been waiting for this double-digit lead. The only poll that matters is Nov. 4, but. . .
. . . a little joy at seeing this in such an important state (home, although I need to get back there someday), is I think called for tonight.

Besides, a little two-step does no one any harm once in a while.

to find some obscure Michigan poll that had McCain up by 3 points.

Ough!

Hey remember when WJR was a truly great radio station? The Great Voice of the Great Lakes? Tigers, Red Wings broadcasts, Adventures In Music with Karl Haas, J.P. McCarthy?

WTF happened to that station? Now it's 24 hour Rush Limbaugh assholery.

Ugh.

14. Yeah, I do.
I happen to know the prez of the station too; lived in same sub growing up. What happened there was what happened to a lot of super watt AM stations that went far right in the 90's during the Clinton hate years. Even McCarthy bought into the crap toward the end of his time on the radio, IMHO. Now they got Beckman and that semi-fascist Paul W.

Only tolerable show was Mitch Albom, which they shortened to squeeze in Shawn Insanity. At least there is Ed Schultz on tape delay in the 3-6 time slot. My band played on Albom's show numerous times.

Gosh, I remember Bud Guest and the "Sunny Side of the Street Club." My brother was friends with Mike Worf...you know, Kaleidoscope.

When I moved out of state in the late 70's, I'd rig up stuff just to listen to Ernie Harwell call the Tiger games.

Now, WJR is just another right-wing freak show. It's just so damn sad.

12. I read you have to factor in 9% for racism
In the latest New York Review of Books, there's an article about race and elections. And in a nutshell, Obama needs at least a 9% lead to beat McCain - a number of factors including the racists who won't admit their racism in a poll.

DECISION 2008: POLL
Poll: Crisis boosts Obama in Mich.
3 in 5 likely voters fear another Great Depression; majority like Democrat's solutions more than rival's.

Gordon Trowbridge / Detroit News Washington Bureau

The Wall Street financial crisis has deepened Michigan voters' economic anxieties, a factor that appears to have boosted Democrat Barack Obama in the presidential race here, according to the latest Detroit News-WXYZ Action News Poll.

The survey, commissioned by The News, WXYZ and three outstate television stations and conducted by Lansing's EPIC-MRA, shows real fear of nationwide economic disaster: Three out of every five voters said they worry the crisis could spark another Great Depression, and nine out of 10 say they are concerned about its effect on the economy.

Amid that fear, Obama's support appears to be rising. The survey shows likely voters here prefer Obama over Republican John McCain, 48 percent to 38 percent, a nine-point jump in Obama's lead from the last EPIC-MRA poll, released just last week.

EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn said there are several favors that could account for Obama's lead, including the random variations present in any sampling of voters. But Porn said the poll also reflects real movement toward Obama. By 10 points, 42 percent to 32 percent, Michigan voters say Obama, more than McCain, has proposed ideas for dealing with the financial meltdown that reflect their own views.

and eventually just focus on keeping the Bush states in tact (well other than IA and maybe even NM). His numbers in Kerry/Gore states just aren't looking all that good, other than NH and I think that will look worse for him too.

Obama just needs to win one or two other 'big' states like CO or VA. But it looks like a few others are opening up too like NC and IN. Obama's paths to 270 are opening up...

If these past 7 years have taught us anything it's not to count our chickens before they hatch. I won't be able to dance until Obama is sworn in on January 20, 2008. Before then, I'll be expecting the military junta no matter what the polls say today. :(

That being said... my sister in rural Michigan will be VERY happy to read this. :)

rethuglican brainwashing! I guess seeing the impending Bush/republican Great Depression 2 right in your face is more sobering than Pills Limbaugh horseshit, eh?

Now if Ohio would get a clue, President Obama and the democratic controlled Congress can start the massive rebuilding of America.

30. This is a good sign, but I think the Republicans' strategy on this bailout will work
and ultimately cause them to win.

They're going to paint the Democrats as siding with Bush on this bailout, while the Republicans in Congress vote oppose it. It will be successful probably.

Also, if the Palin debate is postponed and held close to the election (of course the media will spin it as though she exceeded all expectations and destroyed Biden; that's just a given), it'll help McCain significantly just in time for the elections.

Obama signs outnumber McCain's by at least 10 to 1. The rest of the country may be in a "recession", but auto-dependent Michigan has been in a full blown depression for some time & we're tired of it.

The last straw for the republicans is the bailout of filthy rich Wall Street thieves. The majority of people in this country have been kicked in the nads one to many times by the lyin fascist republicans!

Obama is going to step out on that stage tonight and destroy McBush! This is the beginning of the democratic LANDSLIDE!:toast:

We the people are going to severely punish these rethug jackals, at the polls and hopefully in the courts as well, that have run wild for the last 12 years!
