Palin: Pakistan comment response to 'gotcha' query
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 07:51 PM by maddezmom
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Gov. Sarah Palin said Monday that her comment about attacking terrorist targets in Pakistan, which appeared to contradict the position of GOP presidential nominee John McCain, was a response to a "gotcha" question from a voter.

"This was a voter, a constituent, hollering out a question from across an area asking, 'What are you gonna do about Pakistan? You better have an answer to Pakistan.' I said we're gonna do what we have to do to protect the United States of America," Palin told the "CBS Evening News" in an interview about her exchange with a voter Saturday at a Philadelphia restaurant.

The Republican vice presidential candidate's answer was similar to Democratic nominee Barack Obama's statement that he would support sending U.S. troops into Pakistan to attack high-value targets like Osama bin Laden and other top al-Qaida leaders who are thought to be hiding in tribal areas along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

"If that's what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should," Palin told the voter during the exchange, which was captured on video.

McCain Accuses Press of 'Gotcha Journalism'
By Howard Kurtz
John McCain accused the media of "gotcha journalism" in response to a question about whether his running mate had contradicted him on his policy toward Pakistan.

Over the weekend, Sarah Palin told a voter in a restaurant that the U.S. should launch cross-border attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan to "stop the terrorists from coming any further in." That appeared to contradict McCain's criticism of Barack Obama for talking about such potential tactics in public.

In a joint interview with CBS's Katie Couric Monday, McCain defended Palin and at one point intercepted a question intended for her. Here's how the exchange went:

COURIC: Is that something you shouldn't say out loud, Sen. McCain?

McCAIN: Of course not. But, look, I understand this day and age "gotcha" journalism. Is that a pizza place? In a conversation with someone who you didn't hear ... the question very well, you don't know the context of the conversation. Grab a phrase. Gov. Palin and I agree that you don't announce that you're going to attack another country.

4. All negatives for the Republicans
This has entered the realm of self-mockery. Palin just had her dad come to school to ask the teacher to stop calling on her. It was lame and embarrassing.

5. Seems like..
Gee it seems like every time somebody asks a simple question that Sarah Failin can't answer it is a 'gotcha' or a 'trap' or something. Of course when you are VP or god forbid President foreign leaders and the press will only ask you softball question so you won't be shown to be the idiot you are. Give me a break.

14. The economy there is blowin' up, too.
When asked about Pakistan and the situation in Waziristan, the woman referred to their economy.

Forget everything else, all the alleged "gotcha" moments, the cruelty to animals, the crazy religious shit: THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUSLY IGNORANT. She doesn't know what the hell's going on in Pakistan, she doesn't know what's wrong with the economy, she can't name any SCOTUS decisions (except Roe v. Wade, of course), and she doesn't know what Gaza and Hamas are.

12. Stump the Candidate?
I think Sarah has lost the 'stump the candidate' question. If she can't handle questions from average Americans she bumps into at a restaurant, how can she handle world politics?

Tell Sarah to get her nose out of the NHL and get back to to the Midgets or Mites, she's out of her league.

18. McCain is very sexist--he could have stayed off camera and fed her
answers. Instead he has to interrupt and then give her talking points. He reinforces her lack of knowledge and comes off like a domineering father. And his poor attempt at humor.
