GOP club head in SoCal quits over Obama caricature

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.—The president of a San Bernardino County Republican club has resigned after taking heat for distributing a newsletter with a caricature of Barack Obama on a fake food stamp surrounded by ribs, watermelon and fried chicken.

In a letter sent to members Wednesday, Diane Fedele said she was resigning as head of the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated.

She apologized for "poor judgment and lack of insight and sensitivity" and said she was immediately stepping down to avoid more negative publicity for the volunteer group.

Officials with the state Republican Party have said the GOP club is not directly responsible to the state party.

In the October newsletter sent to about 200 members and associates, Fedele included an image she pulled from an e-mail making the rounds of the Internet.

The fake $10 food stamp showed Obama's head on a donkey's body surrounded by a bucket of KFC chicken, a slice of watermelon, a slab of barbecued ribs and a pitcher of Kool-Aid.

The story ricocheted around the world on Web sites, blogs and e-mails, prompting reports from media outlets as far away as the BBC and the Jerusalem Post. Fedele was criticized by pundits across the country, including MSNBC cable TV host Keith Olbermann, who dubbed her the "worst person in the world."

I e-mailed the phone # of Fedele's "Club" to all of my progressive friends and urged them to call and demand her resignation. I also urged them to do the same with all of their contacts. I'm sure many others did the same and Boom! One less racist in charge at the GOP. Bachmann's case is of course even more amazing, with 680,000 raised for her opponent in 48hrs after she spewed her wingnut bile. The "internets" have finally united the Progressive Movement!
