North Charleston Woman Uses Last Moments In Life to Vote
Source: WCIV-TV

North Charleston, S.C. - For a 93-year old North Charleston woman, casting her vote was a matter of life and death.

Very little was missing in Dora Fitzgerald's 93 years of life, she had a marriage of 65 years and family that spreads generations, but politics was never a passion until the final year of her life.

Fearful that November was too long to wait, her daughter sent for an absentee ballot. It arrived last week.

“She made her mark, and we put it in the envelope, my brother and I walked to the mailbox, it was 11 o’clock Wednesday morning and I said ‘Mom its in the mail, you’ve done your thing, Barack’s going to win,’ and she kind of smiled and it was kind of a deep sigh, a sigh of relief, and in less than an hour later, she died,” said M. Fitzgerald.

3. bless her heart. looking out for her family to the end.
my mother waited until the next day to pass to the summerlands because the day she stroked out was my sister's birthday. We have a weird thing about this sort of thing. My brother was talking to Grandma on the phone when she died, my Grandpa died the day before my own birthday and Papa hung on until after his birthday because he shared it with my nephew, his most beloved boy.

4. I read somewhere that such ballots don't count if the voter
dies before election day--or before they are counted--or some such thing.

12. It wouldn't shock me if there was such a provision.
And I don't pretend for a second to know, one way or the other. But consider a vote cast by a service person in Iraq or Afghanistan being voided because they were killed on Nov. 3. Huge outcry, I'm guessing.

24. Our local board of elections said
they've never fished a dead person's ballot out of the bin - but all the same I would have waited to tell the story until after Nov. 4th...just in case they feel compelled to act on the public report that one of their voters is no longer with them.

14. My 99 yr old cousin did the same
With the help of her hospice care person using an absentee ballot she voted proudly for Obama and then, bless her heart, a day or two later, she gave up the ghost, left this life. But before she said her last goodbye, she told us how proud she was to be able to vote for Barrack Obama. She recognized the privelege.

16. God speed
Prayers to the departed soul ...

i hope that Obama or his campaign is informed of these kind of stories. It shows the kind of goodwill investment that the public is making towards his candidature; how he needs to rise about petty politics when he gets to the white house - and how the public is counting on him to do so.

18. Define "petty politics."
Because if your definition means do not investigate or prosecute, then you can stuff it where the sun don't shine.

I plan to be extremely petty about federal and war crimes.

19. I'm feeling a little petty about torture, how about you? Downright crabby.
I feel petty about everything that's happened since the first election was stolen in 2000.

This country has been through HELL in the last 8 years, and god help all the murdered innocents in Iraq and their grieving, permanently damaged families and loved ones.

22. petty as in corrupt
nope ... i am anti-bush but i haven't made any opinion for or against indicting him for war crime

to me Obama has the chance to transcend the everyday politician ... so many people have come forward to support his candidature ... from warren buffet to the blue collar worker ... i hope he fulfills his promises ..

and for that ... he needs to be much better than the corrupt that we see in washington ... time for us to sweep the lobbyists and the various corrupt beauracratic functions

go Obama go

23. politics and candidates
aside, this lady should be an example to anyone and everyone who feels that they don't have the time to vote...she stuck around, possibly past her time, to make her final mark on history.
