McCain volunteer charged with taking Obama signs
Source: Pittsburgh Post Gazette

A McCain campaign volunteer in Blair County has been charged with one misdemeanor count of receiving stolen property for allegedly plucking 40 Obama signs from public areas and placing them in the back of his sport utility vehicle.

Logan Township police yesterday charged Michael G. Jennings, 39, after finding the signs in his vehicle at the county's Republican Committee headquarters. Officers were tipped off by a Democratic committeeman.

Mr. Jennings told police "that he did indeed take the signs from the roadways, but it was in an attempt to prove a point to the Democratic Party for them stealing McPain/Palin elections signs," according to a police affidavit.

1. At least he has a rock-solid defense:

4. That is the county in which I grew up. Still have lots of family in the area...
Most of them are McCain supporters and voted for Bush both times because, "he is such a Godly man."

A lot of true "no nothings" there... They believe what they believe and don't want to be confused with the facts.

During a recent phone call with my mother, after being goaded by her ignorance, I gave her some facts.

"How do you know all of this?" she asked. I keep myself informed. I don't get news from just one souce; I get it from all of the world.

"You are so much smarter than I am."

Well, I am, but it isn't polite to admit it, so I said, "I don't know that I'm smarter than you."

"Yes, you are," she replied. "But smarter doesn't mean wiser," she added smugly.

She is my mother, so I restrained myself and didn't ask her how one could make wise decisions if one didn't have a clue what they were deciding about...

Dumb is dumb, but really stupid is refusing to accept the information available because it doesn't fit one's preconceived ideas.

7. So if wisdom is not the same as intelligence, what is it?
  • "Common sense" (which is neither)
  • folk wisdom - mostly urban myths
  • non book-learnin' intelligence eg. social or emotional intelligence

    11. My mother is a "born-again" fundie. So, of course, she is wiser than I am, since I am not...
    At least in her mind.

Intelligence doesn't equal wisdom, but it sure helps gain wisdom when coupled with experience and willlingness to learn and to look at all sides of a situation before making a decision.

Isn't there some quote about ignorant people being confident that they know everything while educated people are unsure?

    19. I would have put her in her place
"You are so much smarter than I am." Well, I am, but it isn't polite to admit it, so I said, "I don't know that I'm smarter than you."

I'd have said "yes, I am smarter than you are because that's why you struggled, saved and sacrificed to send me to the best schools--and I made the grades which advanced me through school on track. You did this so that I could achieve more than you did to make a better life for myself.

"Yes, you are," she replied. "But smarter doesn't mean wiser," she added smugly.

"In my case, it does. A wise person chooses to make sure they are fully informed from a variety of sources and never blindly follows only what they want to hear, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary that what they believe is simply not the truth. Nor do I riposte with a proud statement such as yours, as pride goes before destruction and the haughty spirit before the fall."

See, my mother is somewhat like yours, but I'm an adult now, as is she; and she is going to respect my intelligence or she's going to receive the sharp edge of my tongue. Respect is a two way street, especially once you're grown. Don't get me wrong: I love my mother to pieces, but I don't tolerate insults from anyone, especially her.

    22. No. We were very poor. I was the second child of ten. She always managed to save

five dollars here and five dollars there to send to those evangelical radio types (the kind that wore thousand dollar suits and Rolex Presidential watches) for their "Christian Ministries." ("Please, give what you can. Any amount helps us to spread the Word of God to those desperately in need of it. Please help us keep our ministry alive...." ad nauseum.)

I gave up on her thirty some odd years ago. There was barely any contact to or from her, except maybe a phone call once a year and a letter now and then.

It is only in the last year that she has suddenly remembered that she has an elder daughter and wants to make contact (and perhaps to enhance her final reward in Heaven by "saving" said daughter.

I endure the weekly phone calls (when I answer them) out of politeness. She's getting close to eighty years old. I don't see her changing now and have no reason to commit an act of futiity.

(BTW, I've paid for all of my own schooling, and was paying my way from the age of sixteen onward... And I don't care whether she respects me or not. She's not part of my life anymore for very good reasons.)

    5. My ignorant "assanine sister" claims her mcOld/lipstick-pig sign ...
...was stolen by some "libruls". Said she heard that 87% of all mcAncient/dip-shit signs are stolen by libruls. Doh...does this mean they caught the perpetrators and determined them to be "libruls". God, these repugs are a lower life form.

We are a nation of morons...and the repugs are #1.

    10. So when the freeway maintenance people put the signs in a dumpster, are they also guilty?
I'm curious about the logic of this charge.

i'm pretty sure in pennsylvania candidates have 30 days after the election to remove the signs or they forfeit them as their property.

    15. Meh
Douchebags abound, on both sides. Case in point: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/phil-busse/confessions-of-a-lawn-sig_b_139179.html.

    This isn't a right v. left issue.

It's a case of most people respecting others property and free speech rights, and a minority who do not.

    16. we had our obama sign stolen from our front lawn. theft AND trespassing on private property.
we called the cops as we saw the van when it happened, although we couldn't see the tags. the police practically laughed at us.

stealing campaign signs happens ALL OVER. it's amazing what some people think is fair and reasonable in politics.
