Guantanamo should stay open, waterboarding OK: Cheney

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The Guantanamo 'war on terror' detention center should remain open indefinitely, Vice President Richard Cheney told ABC News in an interview Monday, while also defending the harsh interrogation method known as waterboarding.

Cheney was asked when the detention camp at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba can be "responsibly" be shut down. "Well, I think that that would come with the end of the war on terror," he told ABC.

And when is that? "Well, nobody knows," Cheney said. "Nobody can specify that."

In previous wars the United States has "always exercised the right to capture the enemy and then hold them till the end of the conflict. That's what we did in World War II with, you know, thousands, hundreds of thousands of German prisoners," Cheney said.

"The same basic principle ought to apply here in terms of our right to capture the enemy and hold them.

15. We will need to keep an eye on him, even in "retirement."
I don't believe for a minute that Cheney is going to go quietly into that good night. He is an evil conspirator, and to think he's going to accept his loss of power without conspiring behind the scenes is not rational, given the evidence.

There's an extraordinary book here, and I fear it's not fiction.

14. If Dick Cheney says it, it must be true,
for he is an honorable man. So are they all who work for George Bush, all honorable men. None would sell their integrity cheaply and knowingly deceive the citizens. For they are honorable men. Cheney may have said years ago that the Iraqi insurgency was in its last throes, if you will. And whether you will or not, it was not so. But Cheney is an honorable man. So are they all, honorable men. Cheney may defend torture, and thus technically have made himself a war criminal. But he is an honorable man. So are they all, honorable men. Cheney may have said the Iraqis would greet us with flowers and chocolates, and now they throw shoes at our leader. But Dick Cheney is an honorable man. He may have shot a man in the face, yet never been charged with even a misdemeanor for it. For he is an honorable man, who said he was sorry. He may support denying prisoners the rights guaranteed under the Geneva Conventions, yet he is an honorable man, who will not say he is sorry for torturing our enemies, or victims of mistaken identity, or people who were falsely accused.

When you think of Dick Cheney, or George W. Bush, who among you does not think of the honor of our nation?

17. I guess Cheney wants to see if he can hit negative approval ratings
I don't think politicians should let their actions be dictated by approval ratings but Cheney has proven he really doesn't give a fuck what anyone (military officers, career diplomats, CIA, etc.) thinks if it contradicts his personal world view.

Cheney was key in clearing CIA interrogation tactics

The vice president says that the use of waterboarding was appropriate and that the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, should stay open until 'the end of the war on terror.'
By Greg Miller
December 16, 2008

Reporting from Washington -- Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday that he was directly involved in approving severe interrogation methods used by the CIA, and that the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, should remain open indefinitely.

Cheney's remarks on Guantanamo appear to put him at odds with President Bush, who has expressed a desire to close the prison, although the decision is expected to be left to the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama.

Cheney's comments also mark the first time that he has acknowledged playing a central role in clearing the CIA's use of an array of controversial interrogation tactics, including a simulated drowning method known as waterboarding.

"I was aware of the program, certainly, and involved in helping get the process cleared," Cheney said in an interview with ABC News.

If ever there was a candidate for hell...

This man is pure evil. He has no concern whatsoever for all of the murders, torment, war crimes, maiming, torturing or pain that he has inflicted on the world.
