UN: Israel shelled house where civilians were held

JERUSALEM – A U.N. agency says Israeli troops evacuated Palestinian civilians to a house in Gaza City, then shelled the building 24 hours later.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says the shelling occurred Monday, two days after Israel began its ground offensive against Hamas militants in Gaza.

Based on eyewitness testimony, the account added details Thursday to an incident previously reported by The Associated Press and an Israeli human rights group.

The U.N. agency says 110 people were in the house and 30 people were killed, far higher figures than in other accounts.

1. This, after IDF forces opened fire on an aid convoy
Said aid convoy was coordinating its position and activities with the Israeli forces.

Is there anyone wondering why the Palestinians still fight?

2. Excellent question. Is there anyone wondering why the
Palestinians still fight, such as fire Grad missiles deep into Israeli territory in order to trigger this latest tragedy?

Yup, I wonder the same thing.

3. So Palestinians are to blame, right?
You'll have to explain this to me because I'm at a loss.

June 19, 2008. Egypt negotiates cease-fire between Israel and Hamas (known as the tahida)
November 5, 2008. Israeli forces fire missiles into Wadi al-Salqa village in the center of the Gaza strip, killing four. Ground forces arrest six.
November 26, 2008. Hamas fires rockets into Sderot. Israel declares Ceasefire to be broken.
December 29, 2008. Hell starts breaking loose.
January 9, 2009. cboy4 tries to pretend all the events above actually happened in reverse order. Much laughter ensues

Now, I don't know, maybe math works differently in the Levant, but here in America, the number 5 generally comes well before the number 26. Further, maybe I'm crazy, but I would think that one side firing missiles would break a cease-fire as certainly as the other side firing rockets. Given these two facts - that 5 comes before 26 and missiles can break a cease-fire... I would be inclined to say that Israel kind of broke the cease-fire, with quite predictable results.

I mean hey, I'm a tolerant sort of guy, but if you shoot some missiles at me, shit's goin' down, you know? Well, assuming I don't end up a maimed head-on-a-stump.

The word you're looking at, re; Palestinian fighting, is "retaliation". Not the smartest move, you know, throwing the military equivalent of bottle rockets at a nuclear-armed nation that jus' don't give a fuck... But I can understand

4. Yup, the Palestinians are to blame for starting this latest
conflict.

There's no getting around it that the Grad missiles were fired from Gaza deep into Israeli territory.

We're talking about recently .. we're talking about who provoked whom this time.

And the answer is Hamas!

So I don't want to hear about how the Israelis are responsible this time around.

Hamas recklessly placed their population in deadly danger because they foolishly decided to fire rockets.

Your propaganda is entertaining, but of course just that.

Hamas propaganda.

12. So somehow Israel firing missiles into the Gaza strip isn't breaking the ceasefire
Yet when Hamas fires missiles into Israel three weeks later, that does break the ceasefire?

Oh, and it's convenient of you to also forget that Israel not only walled Gaza in, but also cut it off from basic necessities for survival, food, water, electricity, etc. I suppose slowly starving Gaza is not breaking the ceasefire either:eyes:

13. No Silly,
It must have been Hamas that secretly slipped into Israel, got a hold of the missiles and launched them at Gaza completely unbeknown to Israel. And about that food and water thing, its all an elaborate scam. Really they're all living like kings. Fat, rich, lounging in their tanning beds.

Its ALL just Hamas propaganda.

:nopity:

Keep on making excuses for the Hamas coward thugs who started the latest situation by lobbing Grad missiles a staggering 20-plus miles into Israel.

How terrifying it must have been for those families, but you don't seem to give damn.

Ever wonder why the poor little Hamas terrorists never, ever seem to run out of rockets, but gee, they just can't keep enough humanitarian aid on hand for all of the women and children they all but put targets on their backs by puting them in danger?

It's fascinating how these Hamas thugs can fire missiles into a foreign country, but yet the foreign country that retaliates (like an foreign country would do), is the one to blame. lol.

Unreal. Ha Madhound?

21. How predictably one-sided.
You talk about terrified Israeli families. Not a word about all the people killed by Israeli bombs: Ambulance drivers, refugees, the house in Zeitoun (?), the bombing of the press outlets? Tell me about human rights, cboy.

24. Umm, it's already been confirmed that Israel is the one who broke this ceasefire first
But sadly, that simply doesn't fit into your preconceived notion that everything connected with Israel has got to be good, that Israel does no wrong.

Sad that you're willing to give a country who broke the ceasefire first, who is using prohibited weapons, who is committing war crimes and humanitarian atrocities, sad that you're so blind.

Must suck to live in a world so disconnected from reality.

26. Well, it's a good thing that Israel responded appropriately...
...and with all due restraint and care for civilian casualties.

Except for those nearly 300 children, of course.
Oh, and those schools and med centers.
And the UN aid workers.

Fascinating, indeed. Israel can do no wrong, eh? Good to know.

25. You don't want to hear it?
Really. You don't want to hear facts that counter your opinion? Well that's too bad.

There was a cease-fire. Israel shot first. This is a simple fact, easily verified. Now you can call it propaganda all you like, but that doesn't make it so. Israel shoots during a cease-fire, and Hamas retaliates. This isn't rocket science (pardon the pun).

You can make all the arbitrary cut-off dates you want to denote "recent" conflict in order to make yourself right. But from the perspective of international law and the rules of engagement, the starting point of this current conflict is November 5th, 2008, when the cease-fire brokered on June 19th the same year was broken by Israel.

The men were terrorists.
The women were hiding the terrorists.
The babies were future terrorists.

The explanations are soooo predictable.

Journalist, UN workers and ICRC workers. They want no independent witnesses. They want the IDF to tell the story.

I find the Israeli military's actions deplorable, but it has nothing to do with the Jewish people of the world.

If they are on the up-and-up, you'd think they would want witnesses, especially journalists and the Red Cross.

19. AP: UN rights chief wants investigation of Gaza abuses
UN rights chief wants investigation of Gaza abuses
2 hrs 42 mins ago

GENEVA – The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights called Friday for an independent war crimes investigation in Gaza after reports that Israeli forces shelled a house full of Palestinian civilians, killing 30 people.

Navi Pillay told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council that the harm to Israeli civilians caused by Hamas rockets was unacceptable, but did not excuse any abuses carried out by Israeli forces in response.

Pillay went further in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corp., saying an incident in Gaza City this week "appears to have all the elements of war crimes."

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Israeli troops evacuated Palestinian civilians to a house in the Zeitoun neighborhood on Jan. 4, then shelled the building 24 hours later.

The U.N. agency said 110 people were in the house, according to testimony from four witnesses.

On Thursday, the international Red Cross said the Israeli army refused rescuers permission to reach wounded people in the neighborhood for four days. Israel said the delay was caused by fighting in the area.

Good. That's a start.

But will the international community back the UN up and actually take a stand against Israel?
