Obama’s Mother-in-Law to Move Into the White House
Source: NYT

It’s official: Marian Robinson, the 71-year-old mother-in-law of President-elect Barack Obama, will be moving into the White House, transition officials said on Friday.

In fact, Mrs. Robinson is already in town, helping to smooth the family’s personal transition as Mr. Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters prepare for new lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

“She is here to help them get up and running,’’ said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Mrs. Obama. “She will determine in the coming months whether or not she wants to stay in D.C. permanently.”

(snip)

“I’ve never lived outside of Chicago, so I don’t know,’’ said Mrs. Robinson, hesitating a bit as she considered last year whether she was willing to move into the White House. “In the end, in the end, I’ll do whatever. I might fuss a little, but I’ll be there.”

1. This will be good for the girls too. I can imagine how much they
would miss their grandmother if she stayed in Chicago.

3. This only makes sense.
Security will be easier, too, since she'll be in the WH. Otherwise, she'll have the SS around all the time in Chicago. As a grandmother myself, I can see why she'd want to do it, if only to be near her grandbabies.

25. I'd like to see Maya move in too
With her husband and child. I imagine security will also be an issue for them. Maybe she can get a teaching job at one of the DC area universities.

4. Mrs. Robinson, for your sanity's sake, get an apt. at the Mayflower or CT Ave. to get away sometimes
and for the girls to be in a place without servants sometimes.

Welcome to DC!
And there's a Krispy Kreme just up CT Ave. at Dupont Circle.

7. That's great. Hope she chooses to make it permanent.
It was mentioned in an article during the primaries that she is very involved with Malia and Sasha...she stayed with them while their parents traveled during the primaries. Michelle also remarked in one interview that she was lucky that she had her Mom to help so much with the girls. I had wondered (and hoped) she would move to DC with the Obama family to help ease the transition for the girls.

17. The First Family starts a new American trend with First Grandma
Many people will be moving in with family members in the next couple of years. Many already have. Many young people will have to wait to move away from their parents too.

Good for some, not so good for others. But I think it's good for the Obama's. First Grandma will be a perfect anchor for Malia and Sasha. I like that.

43. My MIL has been living with us
hopefully temporarily, for a year and a half. Nice lady, but her habits and the loss of personal privacy drive me out of my friggin mind.

However, the Obamas will have just a tad more space than we do. And I doubt that Mrs. R sits around in a nightgown and ratty bathrobe all day, watching TV and smoking on the porch.

39. i KNOW!
Such a sourpuss. I think she was actually deliberately mean and hurtful to him sometimes--and if you've read his letters to her you know what I mean--which I could never understand because he was so utterly devoted to her. (Can you tell I love Harry? Not that he didn't make mistakes, but he was such an honorable man.)

40. Yes, even when Harry was president, Mother Wallace
still didn't think he was good enough for her daughter. A real sour puss. Of course, there was personal tragedy with her husband committing suicide many years before, and that possibly contributed to her contrariness.
