Invoking Obama, House Judiciary Chairman subpoenas Rove
Source: Raw Story - John Byrne

Invoking President Barack Obama, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) has subpoenaed former Bush Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove about his alleged involved in the political prosecution of an Alabama governor and the firings of nine US Attorneys.

The subpoena, approved by an earlier vote of the House, was issued pursuant to "authority granted in H.R. 5 (111th Congress), and calls for Mr. Rove to appear at deposition on Monday, February 2, 2009."

Specifically, it enjoins Rove "to testify regarding his role in the Bush Administration’s politicization of the Department of Justice, including the US Attorney firings and the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman."

US Attorney Resigns
Following Conyers’ Request for BBC Documents
by Greg Palast
June 1, 2007

Tim Griffin, formerly right hand man to Karl Rove, resigned Thursday as US Attorney for Arkansas hours after BBC Television ‘Newsnight’ reported that Congressman John Conyers requested the network’s evidence on Griffin’s involvement in ‘caging voters.’ Greg Palast, reporting for BBC Newsnight, obtained a series of confidential emails from the 2004 Bush-Cheney campaign. In these emails, Griffin, then the GOP Deputy Communications Director, transmitted so-called ‘caging lists’ of voters to state party leaders.

Experts have concluded the caging lists were designed for a mass challenge of voters’ right to cast ballots. The caging lists were heavily weighted with minority voters including homeless individuals, students and soldiers sent overseas.

Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee investigating the firing of US Attorneys, met Thursday evening in New York with Palast. After reviewing key documents, Conyers stated that, despite Griffin’s resignation, “We’re not through with him by any means.”

Conyers indicated to the BBC that he thought it unlikely that Griffin could carry out this massive ‘caging’ operation without the knowledge of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rove.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Excerpt from BBC article

64. This is why I believe McCains campaign was so wacko
Rove knew what would happen if McCain lost, and got too desperate. Hense all of the twisted commercials and campaign meems.

He knew that Obama winning meant prison for him.

90. BTW Congressional subpoenas might be a different game with Dems in charge
Congressional subpoenas have had a couple of weak spots in relation to enforcement -- routine action on non-compliance is taken by the DC US Attorney (action may be declined and, if so, appointing a special prosecutor would require a majority Congressional vote) and Administrative opposition to disclosure in court action to enforce the subpoena can occur.

This 2007 article lays out historical illustrations:
http://www.talkleft.com/story/2007/7/8/1731/15806

With a Democratic majority and an Democratic administration, it is possible that Congressional subpoenas might have more teeth ... the Republicans both in Congress and the Administration undermined the power of this investigatory tool.

So, let's see what happens. Don't assume it is the "same old game" ...

79. He may not be able to do that now...
Before he was able to avoid a confrontation because of Bush pulling the "executive branch versus the legislative branch" rabbit out of the hat. Bush is no longer president. No more rabbits. No more hats.

Hope springs eternal as they say. Maybe Obama will go after all of them after all.

It's a shame the Democrats don't have a 2/3 majority. They could pass legislation banning the Republican Party. They really are all just so corrupted by the last eight years. For those in Texas you can see it and read it every time one of the two Bush lapdogs pretending to be US Senators waxes eloquently about what's wrong with the country. They both need to look in a mirror. They are what is wrong with this country.

OK, since we all know the Republican Party is a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization, maybe we can actually make this a reality. Perhaps Conyers is actually going to follow the procedures and connect the dots this time.

Go JC!

And I say let'em. Who cares what they cry about? They'll be whining so much in the next months it's gonna sound like a friggin' maternity ward. And people are sick of that!

And the Dems can just respond with about how they saw they could get nothing moving forward when Bush does things like commute Scooter Libby's sentence, so they waited until there was no obstructions to justice....like Bush.

Just SAY IT OUT LOUD guys. We...the ones on your side....are all thinking it. If Repugs raise the disrespect meme, just remind them of Cheney's "Fuck you"....and be straight forward, and factual in the 1st place. Dig up sound and video to back you...1st. There's plenty of it!

26. I think Congress was scared of Bush
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 06:49 PM by jmowreader
I don't blame them. Look what happened to Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy. There's also enough uncertainty around the Wellstone crash that even if (or though--I come down on the side of the latter) the root cause of Paul Wellstone's death was Bad Pilots, Bush COULD have had something to do with it. Therefore, it's best not to piss him off.

Now there's no reason to hold back, and I think we'll see some pretty significant convictions over the next year or so.

On edit: If I could only throw two Bush administration members in jail, Karl Rove and Benito Bush would be the two.

82. John Dean was on with Olbermann the other night, I think?
Is that where he suggested that?

Interesting -- ???

Did he add any other thoughts on this?

Meanwhile, I think John Dean did an admirable job of staying alive as Watergate

progressed and even after.

Dean obviously knows much more about the lawlessness of the Nixon administration and

GOP than he has told so far.

We have a long way to go as a nation in even acknowledging the political violence by

the right-wing over the past 45 years -- and maybe more.

When you come to terms with realizing that these are people who as one author noted

would as quickly kill you as look at you, then you aren't going to question very much

whether Wellstone was simply another of their victims.

After finding information about investigations of very early election steals going back

into the mid-1960s http://www.constitution.org/vote/votescam__.htm, I now even question

the Nixon win vs Humphrey. And reflect that it is only since 2000 that Americans even

began to become aware of the possibilities for hacking the electronic voting machines!

And in larger blocks of votes than ever thought possible before and over greater distances.

The journalists passed the results of their investigation onto Larry O'Brien at the DNC

just prior to the Watergate break-ins.

It's now 2009 and I'm not sure how much of the public truly gets the picture --???

84. A "secret pardon" would be like a grant of immunity. He would be
free to talk about everything he knows and not be worried about prosecution for his actions during the GWB admin. BUT, it would not insulate him from prosecution if he does not cooperate with the investigation, if he obstructs justice and if he is found in contempt of this congressional investigation or if he lies to congress.

Defying a subpoena from Congress isn't going to be quite as simple from now on.

He can still do it, of course, but if he does, he'll have to come up with some real justification and pay some real legal bills for the stalling. If he carries a one-way ticket to Dubai in his coat pocket, I'd confiscate his passport(s) like now.

51. ho-hum, I guess Obama isn't going to do anything as president - no different than McCain.....
NOT

Seriously, I get so sick and tired of the complaining that Obama isn't going to do anything and well, looks like he came out with both barrels loaded the day after he was sworn in.

Glad I voted for Obama!!

OK, so one of those damn letters, I mean subponae, is going out. Well la dee da, color me not impressed.

Until I see Rove being asked hard-hitting questions and charged with something, then I will jump up and down. Otherwise more DOG AND PONY show from Conyers.

62. Maybe DU can form a posse and go round the rascal up.
Imagine the press we would get! In yer face free republic!

(Yes I am being snarky.... I do recall that there was an unsuccessful attempt to citizens arrest him not to long ago. I don't know how legal such an arrest would be but the guy who could manage to pull it off would become an even bigger a hero than the guy who threw those shoes at bush!)

65. Jonathan Turley just said on Countdown that Obama now says there is no executive
privilege. If Rove has to testify, he will just lie. The Bushista has made a business out of lying to Congress.

So, I'm of the opinion that they'll make sure he doesn't testify one way

or the other!

80. Love that Conyers covers firing of AGs and Don Siegelman case . . .
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 01:32 AM by defendandprotect
If there were any chance, however, that Rove would crack -- they'd quickly throw

him off a cliff.

So expect to see either prevention of his appearance . . . or maybe a coma?

Edited for ...

PS: What could be more frightening to Democrats than what they actually did to

Don Siegelman!
