Minister says allowing conditional use was "mistake"

Malaysia revives ban on Christian use of "Allah"

KUALA LUMPUR (AlArabiya.net, Reuters)

The Malaysian government has withdrawn permission for the conditional use of the word "Allah" by Christian publications to describe God, the state news agency Bernama reported on Saturday.

The decision effectively re-imposes an earlier ban on Christians' use of the word pending a court ruling.

Bernama quoted Home Affairs Minister Syed Hamid Albar as saying his ministry had rescinded a decree issued on Feb. 16 which allowed the conditional use of the word, which he said was a mistake.

"There is a judicial review on the matter and we leave it to the court to decide," said Syed Hamid.

The country's Islamist opposition party and Muslim scholars had complained after permission was given earlier this month for the word to be used by Christian publications.

They were required to publish a disclaimer saying they were not intended for Muslims.

7. Re: some asses have already been getting kicked rather hard lately ...
... and a sizable portion of them are Muslim. Please either clarify your non-violent use of violent imagery or let people assume you may really find satisfaction with the real thing ... of which there's still plenty out there.

I don't usually go for that sort of talk, but you remind me about how we Americans may go about trying to nullify certain ways of thinking, but not very often our own. When it comes to regard for Muslims in particular, there really are some 'oppositionists' among us who simply refuse to allow any respect for sanctuary of faith (of the others) being upheld by the authorities, and display the arrogant will to do harm in order to enforce their own view of things. That to me is like a social disease. They too should find out how wrong they are ... whether or not unnecessary wars of invasion are being waged for ... naught ... by their own side.

The context of the use of the word "Allah" by that anti-Islamic church was in reference to something other than God, and though you can argue for rights to insult ANYONE, these control-freak Malaysians don't want the name of God abused as if it were a misnomer. If these so-called 'Christians' went ahead and kept doing so, the results could be far worse!

Insulting one funadmentally deadly political movement in the wrong context will get you banned on DU, by the way.

8. "Sanctuary of faith (of the others)" . . . as in jihad, women being stoned for being raped,
honor killings, not allowing women to be educated.?

No thank you.

10. a woman has to know and accept her fate in life

Chechen leader imposes strict brand of Islam
The bullnecked president of Chechnya emerged from afternoon prayers at the mosque and with chilling composure explained why seven young women who had been shot in the head deserved to die.

Ramzan Kadyrov said the women, whose bodies were found dumped by the roadside, had "loose morals" and were rightfully shot by male relatives in honor killings.

"If a woman runs around and if a man runs around with her, both of them are killed," Kadyrov told journalists in the capital of this Russian republic.

The 32-year-old former militia leader is carrying out a campaign to impose Islamic values and strengthen the traditional customs of predominantly Muslim Chechnya, in an effort to blunt the appeal of hardline Islamic separatists and shore up his power. In doing so, critics say, he is setting up a dictatorship where Russian laws do not apply. Some in Russia say Kadyrov's attempt to create an Islamic society violates the Russian constitution, which guarantees equal rights for women and a separation of church and state

of course, that popular culture couldn't really spread to "civilized" parts of the world.

14. In Somali too, the truth and light of Islam in now proclaimed: Sharia Law to Rule
Edited on Sun Mar-01-09 11:32 AM by panzerfaust
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa/02/28/somalia.sharia/index.html

"President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed says sharia law in Somalia will not be strict."

But how can this be? The Law of God it the Law of God - to adopt it at all is to acknowledge that this is a law which transcends any national, any human made law. How can it be adopted, and then not honored?

I pray that such enlightened acceptance of government imposed "sanctuary of faith" will soon lead to the adoption of the Biblical Law of the God of Abraham to be introduced in to this country.

Praise Allah! (whoops, sorry, Praise God!!)

19. "Allah" is simply "God" in Arabic...it's not a name like Bob or Mike...
I say Allah all the time here in Iraq, and no one gets upset...because to them, God is God, whether you say it in English or Arabic.

21. It is really kind of silly, isn't it?
Especially considering that Malay is closely related to Indonesian and Tagalog, like Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are related, and is a far cry from Arabic.

22. Actually Indonesian is a form of Malay, artificially established as a national
language because there are so many (300) indigenous languages in Indonesia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_language

A very small percentage of Indonesians speak Bahasa Indonesian as their mother tongue.

It takes basic Malay and incorporates some other Indonesian vocabulary ala Esperanto. After this language that was crafted for purposes of national unity was made an official language it was taught in the schools and used in the media as a standard language. Oddly at one point the most profecient Bahasa Indonesian speakers could be found in Moscow where the Soviets, were so sure that Indonesia was going to join the communist movement, developed jr and high schools that used Bahasa Indonesia as the primary language developing potential diplomats and bureacrats that they thought would eventually be posted to their future satelite state.

23. So, unless there's a significant minority of Arabic speakers in Malaysia, the entire point is moot.
Christian Bibles will just write "God" in Malay.

That's like forbidding Brazilian restaurants to print menus in Sanskrit.
