Civil unions bill moves to Ill. House floor

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - A bill giving gay couples the right to form civil unions in Illinois squeaked through a legislative committee Wednesday.

The measure would not legalize same-sex marriages, but it would grant gay couples many of the benefits of marriage. They would have the right to visit their partners in hospitals, make medical decisions and more.

Opponents argue that civil unions amount to gay marriage by another name.

The House Youth and Family Committee approved the bill 5-4. It now goes to the House floor.

2. It's better than nothing, which is what we have now.

Of course, I can't figure out why Illinois is so far behind other states where I've lived on this...Massachusetts, Iowa (yea, Iowa has made better progresson this issue than Illinois). I think, though, that once people see that the world won't come to an end over this, marriage equality won't be so scary to the people of Illinois.
