Hun Sen's party claims win in Cambodia election
Prime Minister Hun Sen's party declared victory Monday in the country's general election, saying it would win about 73 of the 123 seats in the National Assembly.

Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said that according to unofficial results, the Cambodian People's Party had achieved a simple majority in the assembly with 75 per cent of the votes counted from the election on Sunday.

If confirmed, the results would hand CPP a majority that would enable it to lead a coalition government. The party, which has been in power since 1979, had been widely expected to win Sunday's election, giving Hun Sen five more years at the helm.

A smooth transition would be seen as a further consolidation of Cambodia's recent democratic tradition — good news for international donors who contribute millions of dollars every year to pay for more than half of the government's expenditure.
