73. Not fair
I have been following Redoubt on http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/Redoubt.php since I first heard about the activity starting, and even occasionally sharing emails with the scientists emails.

The funny thing is... that I actually CALLED this. If anyone remembers about a week or so ago the activity ceased more or less. I told the experts that this was the calm before the storm. Thats funny.. I'm not a geologist or anything but I am glad that everyone had plenty of time to prepare and/or evacuate.

What I do not think is fair is to go after someone personally, as funny as a biased point of view is.

What I am trying to say is that a volcano is a deadly disaster, a natural disaster happening in one of our States... jokes aren't called for. Granted I doubt anyone was harmed yet or will be... but ashfall is very destructive and deadly to breathe... it is basically microscopic razor blade carbon (fwiw, im sure Redoubt has surpassed its carbon output allowance)

But what I am REALLY trying to say... is that in my expert comical opinion... this comment wasn't funny in the least... and I am frankly offended at its lameness. Do better next time Aristus.

Besides, they interviewed Palin about the eruption this afternoon, to which she promply replied:

"You sir , are full of horsehockey! Ive seen every episode! There was NO Vulcan named Redoubt, and certainly NONE of them exploded! okiedokie then?"

Then the reporter shot himself

81. You had me going with your poutrage there for a while...
I was about ready with some poutrage of my own; namely, that we in Washington State did the whole mountain eruption, suffocating ash, deadly pyroclastic flows thing nearly thirty years ago, and joked about it then, too.

Funny joke, although not very realistic. Any self-respecting reporter would shoot himself BEFORE having to interview Caribou Barbie...

43. Mount Redoubt volcano 'in full eruption'

Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano 'in full eruption'
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0323/breaking29.htm

Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano erupted with four large explosions last night that shot a huge plume of gas and smoke 15 kilometres into the air and sent ash drifting toward the state's largest city Anchorage.

"It is in full eruption," said Matthew Haney, a research geophysicist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

Mount Redoubt, which is some 170 kilometres from Anchorage, rises 3,108 metres above the Kenai Peninsula. About 50,000 people live on the peninsula within 80 kilometres of the mountain and it is one of the most densely populated areas of the state.

The National Weather Service issued an ash-fall advisory and some flights into Anchorage airport have been canceled.

Alaska volcano Mount Redoubt erupts 5 times

By MARY PEMBERTON – 51 minutes ago

WILLOW, Alaska (AP) — Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano erupted five times overnight, sending an ash plume more than 9 miles into the air in the volcano's first emissions in nearly 20 years.

Residents in the state's largest city were spared from falling ash, though fine gray dust was falling Monday morning on small communities north of Anchorage.

"It's coming down," Rita Jackson, 56, said early Monday morning at a 24-hour grocery store in Willow, about 50 miles north of Anchorage. She slid her fingers across the hood of her car, through a dusting of ash.

Ash from Alaska's volcanos is like a rock fragment with jagged edges and has been used as an industrial abrasive. It can injure skin, eyes and breathing passages. The young, the elderly and people with respiratory problems are especially susceptible to ash-related health problems. Ash can also cause damage engines in planes, cars and other vehicles.

Alaska Airlines on Monday canceled 19 flights in and out of the Anchorage international airport because of the ash.

7. Here's a news clip from CNN
Alaska's Mount Redoubt erupts

(CNN) -- Mount Redoubt, a volcano in southern Alaska, began erupting late Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The eruption, starting about 11:38 p.m. Sunday local time (2:38 a.m. Monday EDT), was obscured by darkness and snow. But the initial height of the eruption cloud was estimated at less than 20,000 feet above sea level, the USGS said.

With the eruption, mudflows were possible on the Drift and Crescent Rivers, and ashfall was likely near and downwind from the volcano, the USGS said.

Earlier Sunday in Alaska, researchers had raised the monitoring status for the volcano, which was showing increased seismic activity.

"It is possible for unrest at the volcano to change rapidly, and seismic activity or other signs of unrest could escalate culminating in an eruption within days to weeks," a statement said at the time.

11. I love that stuff about Alaska
Where else can one be standing on the Homer Spit beach sipping a beer, hear a loud explosion, and look up to see Mt. Augustine erupting in the distance? I think it was 1986.

The pilot of our flight back to Anchorage got the word out he was leaving Homer early to beat the ash cloud. That night in the Anchorage Holiday Inn, I awoke to my bed shaking from a local earthquake.

One August we were playing a softball game at Prudhoe Bay at midnight when a blizzard rolled in. We had to call the game because we couldn't see 2nd base from home plate.

I always find something exciting when visiting Alaska. On my next trip I'd like to see Sarah Palin being chased by a pack of pissed off wolves.

21. Jindal was right - we have no need for spending money on monitoring volcanos
If this asshole runs for president I see the campaign commercial that can be used against him. We'll have Jindal doing his rebuttal speech against Obama's SOTU where Jindal talks about what a waste it is to spend money on monitoring volcano (ironic that it comes from a governor whose state relies on Hurricane Monitoring). In the background will be Redoubt erupting.

BTW that is the predicted ash fallout from Redoubt. And that's Anchorage right in the firing range (btw Wasilla is in it too).

Now, I would not wish for anybody to die, but if I can follow a certain politicians line of thinking...... Let's say that terrorists had planted a nuclear device somewhere and I had to pick one person from Alaska to die otherwise millions would be killed and I had no other choice, I would go with Sarah Palin. Palin has such good eyesight that she can see Russia from her porch; so she can get a job in Louisiana standing on the porch of the bay and watching for hurricanes while coaching the LSU basketball team in the off season. Sounds to me like the GOP has some real skills and talents that match up with the needs of the nation!

up and running. Now to wait to see if the cloud cover lifts.

The camera is 38 miles from the mountain, attached to an oil platform.

85. Redoubt's Causes (SFN)
Wash DC 23 Mar (StruggleForNews) - As Mount Redoubt erupted, some were asking why the Obama Administration did not do more to stop it. But other sources say classified documents prove the Administration actually caused the eruption

One governor pointed out that many volcanoes come to the US illegally. "I don't want to monitor them," he said. "I don't even want them here in the first place."

Another governor later provided more specific information. "I can see it from here," she said. "And I can tell you it didn't come from Russia, because we don't let that happen here. Terrorists brought us this volcano from Hawaii."

Both governors expressed anger and dismay at the Administration's failure to prevent foreign volcanoes from entering the US

But highly intelligenced Washington insiders are telling a more ominous story ... http://tiny.cc/obamaredoubted

And, curiously enough, the volcano erupted on the very night that Jindal gave his second response (video here).

Obviously, President Obama is manipulating the volcanoes for political gain.

91. Another explosion last night
REDOUBT VOLCANO (CAVW #1103-03-)
60°29'7" N 152°44'38" W, Summit Elevation 10197 ft (3108 m)
Current Aviation Color Code: RED
Current Volcano Alert Level: WARNING

Redoubt remains at Aviation Color Code RED and Alert Level WARNING. Seismic activity at the volcano is currently relatively low, and no activity is observed in partly cloudy web camera images. Pilot reports and satellite images indicate that a steam plume is currently rising to at least 20,000 ft asl and drifting at least 40 miles to the northwest. We have no indication that the volcano is currently emitting ash, though explosive activity could resume with little or no warning.

The last explosive event occurred last night (March 23) at 7:41 pm (AKDT) and lasted for roughly seventeen minutes. The top of the ash cloud was estimated to have reached at least 50,000 ft above sea level based on National Weather Service radar. Winds in the vicinity of the volcano carried the ash cloud primarily to the west and north. Pyroclastic flows were visible traveling down the volcano's north flank in web camera images. Last night's explosive event was the sixth thus far since explosive activity began Sunday, March 22 at 10:38 PM AKDT.

Yesterday, AVO staff visited the area around Redoubt by helicopter to assess conditions and repair equipment damaged by Sunday night's eruptions. They fixed the telemetry link at AVO's observation hut, which is once again transmitting images from the web camera and data from a GPS and two seismic instruments. Clouds obscured the summit, but observers reported very large lahar and flood deposits in the Drift River Valley that likely occurred during and/or following the first five explosions. These flows, which contained ice, water, mud, and other debris, inundated the Drift River Valley and traveled more than 35 km, reaching Cook Inlet. In the middle to upper Drift River Valley, high-water marks reached 6-8 meters above the valley floor. At the AVO hut (roughly 7 miles NNW of the summit), a 6-cm thick fall deposit was observed.

A gas-measurement flight is currently en route to the volcano.

AVO remains staffed 24 hours per day will issue further information as it becomes available.

Redoubt ash fall continues to hurt alaskans
By Corey Allen-Young, CBS 11 News Reporter
Posted: 03/26/2009 - http://www.ktva.com/ci_12006919

.............

After being relatively quiet for about a day, Redoubt shouted loud and clear twice this morning blowing more than a 12 mile high cloud of ash. Ash that's proving to be quite the nuisance.

"We had two large ash producing explosions this morning, one at about 8:34 a.m. local time and the second one was at 9:24 a.m. local time," said Stephanie Prejean, a geophysicist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory. "We had no short term warning and that's what we expected." Since coming to life Sunday night, Redoubt and its ash is putting a damper into many Alaskan's plans. "My flight has been cancelled to Seattle, so I am stuck at the Anchorage airport," said Stephanie Felix, an Anchorage resident who was trying to get to Seattle for the weekend.

Thursday, multiple air carriers including Alaska Airlines cancelled all flights due to the ashes potential to cause damage ..............

The eruption occurred at about 1:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. ET), the U.S. Geological Survey told CNN.
