Largest American Axle plant will close 500 to be laid off as work goes to Mexico

American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. plans next month to idle the largest factory in its sprawling manufacturing complex, which straddles the cities of Hamtramck and Detroit, union officials told the Free Press.

The company plans to send the work to its plant in Mexico and lay off at least 500 workers.

The move comes a year after workers at the Detroit-based auto supplier accepted wage and benefit cuts in a contract that followed a bitter 3-month strike.

1. New World Order, outsource every job possible, in-source labor for the remaining jobs, and use
profits to fund campaigns for candidates from both major political parties so a president can proudly announce bipartisan support for each new bill she/he signs that slowly tightens the grip of corporatists over the government of We the People.

"We the people are dead, long live the corporation."

2. AAM workers are now making $14/hr. Evidently that's too much.
Free trade is bullshit!

5. "You know that little white speck on top of chicken shit? Well, that's shit too." From Pure Country
spoken by Rory Calhoun and our government is a little white speck.

6. So giving concessions so companies can survive is pointless
American Axle gets concessions and they still ship jobs out of the country. GM and Chrysler get concessions and will probably still file for bankruptcy. Seems like workers will get screwed no matter what they give up.

11. But we already knew that....
the unions have been "conceding" since
the 80's...

It was never "the time" for labor
to make a stand.

Now it's too late.

8. Maybe AAM should hire prison labor. Might be cheaper than hiring those greedy Mexicans.

9. Do you think they might just be weathering this economic storm?
The Greater Depression cometh.

Better to wait it out at $5/hour under bad conditions. There's a bunch of good axles out there getting longer use than they used to get.

You won't buy a new car if you think you won't be able to eat because of buying it.

12. So if we end up at war against extremists in the flatter parts of Pakistan,
will the U.S. military be able to get all the axles that we will need, including spares?

Could the Mexican government refuse to allow axles for military use out of Mexico?

Would the U.S. military stage a takeover of Mexico if it refused to cooperate?

Enquiring minds want to know!

15. this was the warning
if they let the big 3 fail and here it is.

The move is a response to a decision by General Motors Corp., which accounts for 74% of American Axle's sales, to further slash vehicle production this year. The Axle plant to be idled makes parts for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Sales for those trucks have dropped at least 45% so far this year.
