Orange County contractor kills girlfriend, young son, self
Associated Press
10:59 AM PDT, May 6, 2009

An electrical contractor who was having financial problems shot to death his live-in girlfriend and 3 1/2-year-old son before killing himself, police said today.

Officers called to an apartment Tuesday afternoon found the bodies of Craig Rubin, 44, and Mary Striley, 42, on beds in separate bedrooms while the body of their son, Jake, was in a high chair in the kitchen, Sgt. Dan Adams said.

L.A. Now: Local breaking news blogEach had been shot once in the head.

Police were called by the apartment manager, who had not seen the family in several days. The manager said the couple had not moved their cars or answered their phone for days, police said.

Adams said Rubin left a suicide note in which he took responsibility for killing his family.

The motive for the killings was under investigation, but Rubin had financial problems and both his girlfriend and son had health problems, Adams said. He had no details about those problems.

A work van labeled Rubin Electric was parked outside the apartment.

Rubin and Striley had lived together for four or five years, Adams said.

Orange is in central Orange County about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

6. Not sure...
...if that would help.

These assholes that kill their families (Family Annihilators as they are referred to in Psych circles) are arrogant and filled with delusions of grandeur as it relates to their importance within the rest of the families ability to survive without them. They never see the problem as being theirs.

I agree that we need mental healthcare and need to remove the stigma - but in the case of these family killers, I am not sure what could be done to prevent these selfish assholes from killing their 'loved' ones.

22. A psych professional told me that there is a thin line
between suicide and homicide. Many people who feel depressed have suicidal thoughts. Sometimes it spills over into homicide, and the thought process is poorly understood because there are obviously no survivors. Some of these family killers never exhibited violence toward anyone until they committed murder/suicide.

10. I'm starting to believe that the past eight years of
downhill for so many of the middle class and below, are actually breeding this psychosis into what would be considered otherwise normal husband/father/sig-other males. A natural trigger mechanism built in to release when extreme mental trauma and pressure becomes too much to bear and the alpha feels completely trapped with no way out.

Not that that is any excuse.

Just a sinking feeling it will all go down in history as a sign of the times.

13. A big part of the problem is
that the American public has been convinced that if you don't have a 4,500 square foot house, five credit cards, a 60-inch flat screen TV, a huge gas guzzler truck, a BMW convertible, a $100,000 RV, three cruises a year, two ATVs, and a boat, you're a failure.

For many people that crap is what defines them. When that is threatened, they become desperate -- and desperate people do desperate things.

18. Yep - our values system is screwed up in this country
Marketing campaigns, as a matter of course, constantly push the idea that people need to buy, buy, buy and they cement the concept of "haves" and "have-nots" and "have-mores" in people's minds.

Why so many are susceptible to this is a mystery, but I believe it's all about mental conditioning. How else to explain the out-of-touch people who claim they can only subsist on a minumum of tens of thousands of dollars a month? It's a psycholgically programmed threshold that's set artificially and ridiculously high.

Less can be more - there are plenty of societies that function just fine without an embarrassment of consumer goods and disposable income. But as long as people measure themselves by the American standards of "haves" and "have-nots" and "have-mores", they'll live in a swirl of anxiety and pressure.

14. Refused to accept social services?
Considering how conservative Orange County is (home of the John Birchers) I wouldn't be surprised if he swallowed and advocated the BS that the poor were damned by God and there should be no safety net...but then he found himself in need of public health care for his girlfriend and wife. Of course, he knew that Rush would dis him if he took it so...he took the obvious way out.

Tell me, have you spent any more time in Orange County than it took to visit Disneyland?

And the John Birch Society is based in dark blue Wisconsin,

Alot of seats in Orange County could go blue if we ran some reasonable canidates and not bored soccer moms like Debbie Cook who is quite possibly the only person in the country capable of losing an election to Republican Dana Rohrabacher.

16. Someone fires a gun at least 3 times in an apartment and nobody notices?
And nobody even missed them besides the apartment manager?

What a sad society we live in.

20. California definition of "community"
I'm guessing the only reason the apartment manager was interested was that the rent was late. California has no "community" because people do not interact socially except when they are forced to get out of their cars. Now if he had gone on his shooting rampage behind the wheel, that would have been noticed right away.

26. The exception to the rule
Yes, there are those places like Shoshone and Niland where people know everyone in town and take care of each other. Added up, they still don't amount to but a few percent of the state's population.
