WTF?

I wrote them and told them this is a huge national story and they really need to put it on national news.

Here's where you can write them:

4. I read this yesterday on the SFTT website.
The site is one of Col. David Hackworth's efforts, and a pretty good one at that. Rated it a "5" on Yahoo.

For some additional terrific reading, the Vietnam Veterans Against the War website has another good article:

From Vietnam Veterans Against the War, http://www.vvaw.org/commentary/?id=365

Here's an excerpt, but the "lies" go on for quite a while.

"Two years have passed since 9/11 transformed our lives and our nation. Two years have passed in which the Bush presidency has revealed itself to be a very real threat to our freedom and a threat to the peace and welfare of all peoples wherever they live on the planet. In these times — in every day of our lives — we have become a people immersed in lies. The lies come so big and so often that it's hard to believe that we will ever be able to see beyond them.

Lie: The invasion of Iraq was justified. The connection between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda still does not exist. The weapons of mass destruction still haven't been found even though U.S. forces have access to the entire region through conquest. The imminent danger posed by nuclear weapons was fabricated. The complications of this tragic prefabrication are being played out with British Prime Minister Tony Blair as a major villain in his country.

Lie: The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are victories. The occupation of both countries faces growing military opposition. Conditions deteriorate with one or two combat soldiers and larger numbers of indigenous civilians dying each day. Recently former senator Max Cleland, a Vietnam veteran and former VA director, spoke for many of us when he said, "Welcome to Vietnam, Mr. President. Sorry you didn't go when you had the chance."

5. the only reason we invaded Iraq was to put military bases there
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 09:22 PM by maggrwaggr
according to Karen Kwiatkorski (god it's hard to remember how to spell that name)

Everything else is a lie. We didn't do it to spread democracy in the middle east, we didn't do it because Hussein was a threat to anybody, and we didn't do it because of terrorism.

It's purely for strategic purposes.

Oh, and oil.

22. Reason for the Invasion
IMHO the U.S. invasion was more than just about oil and the defense of it. Making Israel a little less paranoid and it getting access to said fossil fuel resources was another one. Justifying a $400,000,000 plus DoD otherwise known as the Department of Defending Massives Budgets was another. Obfusicating the moral and financial bankruptcy of America was another and last but unfortunately not least good old Yank hate and xeniphobia.

It's important that this story gets more exposure.

*On edit*
After reading this article to the end I understand a bit better why Colin Powell was pissed at French diplomacy; they didn't help him much. More back channel talks and less podium speeches might have been useful.
Although i agree with my government's foreign policy on this one, it's diplomacy was not that effective.

13. This is great... here is an excerpt....
<Kwiatkowski got there just as war fever was spreading, or being spread as she would later argue, through the halls of Washington. Indeed, shortly after her arrival, a piece of NESA was broken off, expanded and re-dubbed with the Orwellian name of the Office of Special Plans. The OSPs task was, ostensibly, to help the Pentagon develop policy around the Iraq crisis.

She would soon conclude that the OSP a pet project of Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) and Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld was more akin to a nerve center for what she now calls a neoconservative coup, a hijacking of the Pentagon.

Though a lifelong conservative, Kwiatkowski found herself appalled as the radical wing of the Bush administration, including her superiors in the Pentagon planning department, bulldozed internal dissent, overlooked its own intelligence and relentlessly pushed for confrontation with Iraq.

Deeply frustrated and alarmed, Kwiatkowski, still on active duty, took the unusual step of penning an anonymous column of internal Pentagon dissent that was posted on the Internet by former Colonel David Hackworth, Americas most decorated veteran.

As war inevitably approached, and as she neared her 20-year mark in the Air Force, Kwiatkowski concluded the only way she could viably resist what she now terms the expansionist, imperialist policies of the neoconservatives who dominated Iraq policy was by retiring and taking up a public fight against them.>

....OSP! OSP! OSP! OSP! OSP! SHOUT IT OUT LOUD!!!!

From GD
Ray McGovern on George Tenet and intelligence cover up
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x1178365

Check out excerpt from the interview, has to be true, too many other sources from the other sides that were relaying the information have also made them claims. I think this is why it is important to keep 9/11 on the front burner

http://nathancallahan.com/anexplanation.html

My Briefing with Ray McGovern
George Tenet, Iraq, Neo-Conservatives, Vietnam and 911 through the eyes of a 27-year CIA analyst

Also posted at the OC Weekly
(snip)
"What about Tenet?"

“George Tenet no doubt has a little computer disc with the 27 or so warnings that he gave the president starting in spring and going right up until September 2001," says McGovern. "The president and his advisors in the White House, knowing this, didn’t dismiss Tenet after 911 because it was too much of a risk. Were they to have dismissed Tenet on September 12, they could not have been sure that he wouldn’t have said, ‘Wait a second. Let me print off some of these warnings. Let me show you what I told the president in the president’s daily brief on August 6, 2001.’ So that’s reason number one.

“Reason number two is that Tenet is simply too useful of a guy to have around. He does what he’s told. If he’s told to do an estimate and told to make sure the conclusions come out the same as a Dick Cheney speech from the month before, he’ll do it.”

McGovern is referring to the National Intelligence Estimate (pdf file here) that Tenet cranked out after Cheney’s August 2002 WMD pep rally. It was a cart before the horse exercise in policy making. The politician, Cheney, makes unsubstantiated claims. The intelligence agency fashions a report to cover his backside.

According to an article penned by McGovern for TomPaine.com, “The conclusions of that estimate have now been proven — pure and simple — wrong.”

The real reasons for the Iraq War, he says, are to be found online at the neo-conservative website The Project for a New American Century. "And I would simply add, not as an afterthought, but as a core part of this whole calculus, that this war was fought as much for Israeli strategic objectives as it was for American strategic objectives. As a matter of fact, the people running our policy toward Iraq have great difficulty distinguishing between the two."

As McGovern is speaking, I notice a slight rise in the pitch of his voice — an almost imperceptible quarter step jump.

“If I’m sounding a little angry here,” he says, “there’s no word to describe it.

32. Did you catch THIS bit?

The last reason is the conversion, the switch Saddam Hussein made in the Food for Oil program, from the dollar to the euro. He did this, by the way, long before 9/11, in November 2000 selling his oil for euros. The oil sales permitted in that program arent very much. But when the sanctions would be lifted, the sales from the country with the second largest oil reserves on the planet would have been moving to the euro.

The U.S. dollar is in a sensitive period because we are a debtor nation now. Our currency is still popular, but its not backed up like it used to be. If oil, a very solid commodity, is traded on the euro, that could cause massive, almost glacial, shifts in confidence in trading on the dollar. So one of the first executive orders that Bush signed in May <2003> switched trading on Iraqs oil back to the dollar.

I'd never heard about any of this aspect!

Keep this kicked for the Monday crowd!
