US soldier killed in grenade attack on patrol in northern Iraq, military says

BAGHDAD (AP) — The U.S. military says an American soldier has been killed in a grenade attack in northern Iraq.

That raises the number of American troop deaths so far in May to at least 21 — the deadliest month for American forces in Iraq since September, when 25 died.

A statement says the grenade detonated Friday near a patrol in the northern province of Ninevah.

It doesn't give more details. But insurgent activity has continued in Ninevah and the provincial capital of Mosul despite security gains elsewhere in Iraq.
