GAUHATI, India (AP) — Suspected militants used automatic weapons and machetes to kill a family of four migrant workers Tuesday in India's insurgency-hit northeast.

The attackers killed the family — a husband, wife and their two children — by opening fire then hacking them with machetes on the outskirts of Rangapahar, a town 95 miles (150 kilometers) north of Gauhati, the capital of Assam state, said Bhaskar Mahanta, a state inspector-general of police.

Suspected rebels have targeted thousands of Hindi-speaking migrants from northern states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh who they claim usurp the local population's job opportunities. Most of the victims are small traders or farm workers.

Last year, nearly 100 migrants were killed in such attacks.

"We suspect rebels of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland were behind the attack," Mahanta told The Associated Press. The tribal separatist group has fought for an independent Bodo homeland since its inception in 1986.
