SC Governor Says He 'Crossed Lines' With Women Other Than Mistress (but never had sex with them...)

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says he "crossed lines" with a handful of women other than his mistress — but never had sex with them.

The governor says he "never crossed the ultimate line" with anyone but Maria Belen Chapur, the Argentine at the center of a scandal that has derailed Sanford's once-promising political career.

During an emotional interview at his Statehouse office with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Sanford said Chapur is his soul mate but he's trying to fall back in love with his wife.

He says that during the other encounters he "let his guard down" with some physical contact but "didn't cross the sex line." He wouldn't go into detail.

married people are generally better off forgetting about an extramarital sex if it is not repeated and going on to build a better relationship. This is especially true when children are involved. Anyone who has ever witnessed a divorce and how it tears apart the people who go through it will understand that divorce is a last, last, last resort -- unless it is amicable. If it is amicable, then divorce is not so bad although it is never easy. Normally, the bitterness of a divorce spoils the life a person for a much longer time than does infidelity.

However, when a prominent man like Governor Sanford states in public that his mistress is his soulmate, it isn't just a matter of infidelity. It is a matter of deliberately trying to humiliate and devastate his wife. In this case, Ms. Sanford would have to agree to the humiliation in order to salvage the marriage. That she should not do.

Governor Sanford's statement was too public, the injury to the self-respect of the wife too great. Governor Sanford did not just make a mistake. He didn't just lose control or get carried away. He was out to hurt his wife. That is often the case with infidelity, but the problem here is that he hurt his wife in public, before the world.

Ms. Sanford should get the best lawyer she can possibly find and figuratively tear Governor Sanford's shirt right off his back in divorce court. For the sake of her children, she should fight as loudly and publicly as she possibly can. It's going to be very ugly. It is going to destroy their children, but Sanford's conduct was, in my opinion, aimed to destroy them and her, and his statement was in itself a sort of declaration of war. Governor Sanford's affair was not about sex or love or even infidelity. It was about Governor Sanford trying to destroy his wife

I have seen a lot of these situations. I remember hearing an attorney say that infidelity adds about $10,000.00 to the attorney's fees on a divorce. I would say that in this divorce it will add a couple of $100,000.00 to the attorney's fees unless he just takes his shirt off right now and heads for Argentina with but one suitcase to his name.

Marriage may be about love, but divorce is about money -- and Sanford is about to learn his first real lesson on economics, I suspect.
