Cheney Says Aristide Had Worn Out Welcome
Tue Mar 2, 2004 12:53 PM ET

By Steve Holland
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney said on Tuesday Jean-Bertrand Aristide had "worn out his welcome" as Haiti's president but that the United States did not force him to leave as he claims.

snip

Cheney made clear the United States had lost patience with Aristide in the 10 years since helping him regain power. Some members of the Congressional Black Caucus have accused the Bush administration of allowing the toppling of a democratically elected government in Haiti.

"The fact of the matter was, that Mr. Aristide had worn out his welcome. He was democratically elected but he didn't govern in a democratic manner and had reached the point where clearly the opposition groups, rebels, were increasingly successful at undermining his authority," Cheney said.

_______________

Well, ... Dick sounds like a true supporter of democracy.

If the opposition groups were that successful and so numerous, ...how come they couldn't just vote him out in the next elections ... Aristide is the one who offered to have elections, and the opposition and rebels refused.

6. Typical of the Bush junta--attack Aristide and keep him incommunicado
until the sh*t storm dies down some. Wonder what kind of diversion they're gonna come up with to direct the sheeples attention elsewhere. More bombs in Iraq, Osama nearly caught, Sadam dies, Kerry with an intern--oh I forgot, they tried that already--any number of things could happen at this point.

26. you're likely right
attack and malign Aristide. Villify him. Especially at a time when Aristide can't or is not allowed to respond.

Where's the face-to-face live (or even videotaped) interview of Aristide by the some media? Why can't the media visit him, if he fled willingly and is a free man? What about his wife? She was not shy in talking to the media?

seems to want to follow up and find out the real story. Where's the press for Keeerist's sake? Oh I forgot, they're bought and paid for and only say/do what they're told.

Mildred Aristide is indeed not shy about talking to the media. She's also a US citizen, which might make this real dicey for the Bushies. I heard an interview with her on Democracy Now last Friday--anyone interested can find it at their website www.democracynow.org

13. Do the innocent synchronize their talking points?
On issue after issue, lie after lie, various members of the Bush Administration use the same talking points and the same idiotic buzz words. Does everyone remember intelligence 'chatter'? You can find case after case of this happening.

And yesterday, our good friend Colin Powell said that Aristide was democratically-elected, but that his government was a failure. Big Dick says basically the same thing today.

Here's my question: have you ever seen truth-tellers having to synchronize their message this tightly? Didn't think so. Dick Cheney is LYING. AGAIN. No surprise to anyone here, but I thought I'd point out that this is just one more way to confirm what you already knew.

21. They did come up with a new word, never used before by them...
they said they were repatriating the boat people. The only problem was that the Haitians were still at the shoreline. They said were repatriating instead of telling it like it was - it was/is a blockade. (You are repatriated when you leave/have to leave a country to return to your own country). Right?

So they come up with a new word and it doesn't even apply.

Hey Resident Deficit - the word is blockade.

Well guys, Dubya's government is a failure AND he wasn't even elected! He was appointed by our Repug-licking Supreme Court. Does that mean us peeps at DU can kidnap him and shoot him off to Africa?

Without a doubt Aristide is the better man if only because HE WAS ELECTED.

14. CHENEY COMMENTS ON WOLF BLITZER
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 06:29 PM by eablair3
courtesy of my tivo from an appearance a few minutes ago

BLITZER: Let's move on and talk about Haiti. This is a critical issue. Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide accusing the Bush Administration of effectively orchestrating a coup against him. You're smiling, ....

VP CHENEY: Well, I've dealt with Aristide before, ... uh, when I was Secretary of Defense, .. we had a crisis involving Haiti. He left of his own free will. He signed a resignation letter on his way out. He left with his security detail on an aircraft we provided, not a military aircraft, but a civilian charter. Um, ... now, ... uh, ... I suppose he's trying to revise history, but the fact of the matter is that he'd worn out his welcome with the Haitian people. He was democratically elected, but he never governed as a democrat. He was corrupt. He was in charge of the thugs that were committing crimes in Port-Au-Prince shortly before he left. But, the suggestion that somehow the United States arrested him or forcibly put him on an aircraft to get him to leave -- that's simply not true.

BLITZER: So, you're happy he's gone?

VP CHENEY: I'm happy he's gone. I think the Haitian people are better off for it. I think they now have an opportunity to elect a new government and that's how it should be.

_____________

Incredible.

Oh, REALLY? Just like the opportunity they had when they elected President Aristide?

A normal person trying to pass off that kind of wickedness would worry about lightening striking him dead, or getting some similar "wake up call."

He was democratically elected but he didn't govern in a democratic manner and had reached the point where clearly the opposition groups, rebels, were increasingly successful at undermining his authority," Cheney said. (snip)

How could he say that with a straight face?

From the same Reuters article:
Connecticut Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd accused the Bush administration of being "complicit in watching a democratically elected government have to leave office."

He told CNN on Monday night that Aristide had been given a choice.

"The fact of the matter is, we said to President Aristide: Look, you can you stay and be killed or you can leave; you make the choice. That's hardly a voluntary departure," he said.
(snip)

I'm tempted to believe Christopher Dodd, for some reason.

Aristide won by over 90% the first time, 70-80% the last time, but he has "no legitimacy".

So, based on his own assessment, how much legitimacy does HE have?

Oh, I forgot - we are expected to "get over" the US election fraud just over 3 years ago, but we are at the same time also expected to remember and react to every fucking thing that happened to persons THEY don't appove-of over 10, 15 or 20 years ago!

NOW I understand!

Do their heads spin even a bit? Do they even hear what they say from one moment to the next?

...who said that he was certain that Iraq had tons of chemical and biological weapons, that a the nations of the world would rally to support our invasion of Iraq; and that the Iraqis would welcome our invasion. His statements are invariably and intentionally false.

I don't consider this lying facist an authoritative source on foreign policy. The only reason he is vice-president apart from the coup is because he covered up G.H.W.B's involvement in the unconstitutional and criminal activity related to Iran-Contra.

I would like to know who gave Dick Cheney the right to decide when someone has worn out their welcome with the people who elected them. Cheney in an appearance on Wolf Blitzer say he was "pleased" that Aristide was gone. Why should Dick Cheney have to approve of the leader of another country. It is apalling to see someone so boldly say they a pleased with the result of a coup of a democraticly elected leader. Futhermore, why aren't more in the media more upset that a VP agreed with the overthrowing of a leader of a country
