Parties Seeking to Speak Language of Latino Voters
Both Democrats and Republicans unveil TV ads targeting a crucial constituency.

By Nick Anderson, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — An intense battle for Latino support in this fall's election got underway this week, as President Bush and a Democratic political group launched dueling Spanish-language television advertisements targeting a voting bloc that keeps growing in importance.

On Friday, the New Democrat Network launched a projected $5-million TV campaign with two commercials that promote the party's cause and criticize Bush.

The ads are appearing in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Albuquerque on Univision and Telemundo, the dominant Spanish-language networks, and will debut in Florida after that state's Tuesday primary.

1. the real language
Jobs, family and education. Just like all the Anglo folks.

Pandering in Spanish will not be the answer. Token representation won't be the answer.

The Latino community is very diverse, in fact there is some debate if there is any monolithic tendencies of the Latino communities.

Latinos, particularly those many who have military families can tend to be socially conservative and very particular to law and order issues as those issues tend to effect Hispanics very much; "last thing any criminal wants is a Puerto Rican jury" as my grandfather used to say.

2. Hey, if Kerry gets a Hispanic Veep, can we claim that anybody voting
for Bush is being racist?

Worked for Bush when he was trying to push the judicial confirmation.
