North Korea says strives for nuclear-free peninsula

LONDON (Reuters) - North Korea would give up its nuclear weapons if its national sovereignty were respected and it did not face a nuclear threat, the country's ambassador to Britain said Monday.

But, at the same time, Ambassador Ja Song Nam complained that the world subjected North Korea to double standards and said he doubted there could ever be genuine peace and security while this continued to be the case.

The United Nations Security Council approved expanded sanctions and a trade and arms embargo against North Korea in June after Pyongyang carried out a nuclear test on May 25.

China said Monday its prime minister, Wen Jiabao, would visit reclusive North Korea next week, raising speculation that the trip could help revive stalled talks with global powers on ending Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

they certainly don't want the south possessing nukes.

But it's kind of hard to claim you don't want nuclear weapons when you are actively and aggressively seeking nuclear weapons.

Maybe their ambassador has been told by a few other govts that as soon as the word *peace* is uttered in a sentence, no-one takes any notice of what they're actually doing and they just listen to those nice sounding words instead ;)

8. What a joke.

The DPRK leaders have created the worst hellhole on the planet, complete with mass famines. The nukes are the insurance policy for the DPRK gangsters to stay in power and extort goodies from the world to keep the secret police well supplied with iPods, whiskey, etc., and in order to keep a lid on the situation and run the concentration camps.

Real national sovereignty would mean a revolution with a short rope and a long drop for Kim Jong Il and company.

10. Sovereignty doesn't mean a certain social system.

N. Korea is a sovereign state. Not one I'd want to live in. But it is an independent country, without foreign troops or bases on its soil.

Seriously. They never make any moves like this without wanting something. They build nukes, and then want the world to pay them to lose the nukes. It's a damn extortion campaign.
