Jerry Brown files papers to explore a run for governor

As a gubernatorial candidate, the California attorney general is eligible for up to $25,900 per election from individual donors. He may wait until next year to decide whether to run, an advisor says.

September 30, 2009

State Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown dropped the fiction that he was seeking reelection and filed papers Tuesday to explore a run for governor, a job that he first won in 1974 and has for months been fighting hard, if quietly, to recapture.

Brown's move was born of necessity: Contributions to candidates for attorney general are capped at $6,500 per election for individual donors, but gubernatorial contestants can accept up to $25,900.

"If he chooses to run, it will make him more competitive against a deep-pocketed Republican opponent," said Steven Glazer, a senior advisor to Brown, a Democrat. Two of the three major Republicans in the 2010 race are Silicon Valley moguls who are using personal fortunes for the campaign.

By all appearances, the former Oakland mayor and three-time presidential candidate chose long ago to run for governor again. But by keeping it unofficial, Brown has minimized his clash with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, the lone major Democrat in the June primary.

1. good news
for we Californians who do NOT want "Carlyfornia" or "I did not vote until I was 44 years old" Meg e-bay Whitman.
Go Jerry Brown! He would be both our youngest and oldest Gov. in CA history I believe.

2. I'm a bit skeptical of JB winning the nomination.
I can't remember the other dudes name...Gerimendi! John Gerimendi I feel may have a better chance because of his speeches and how he reaches out---although Jerry has the name recognition. His age could be a (-) factor.

18. That was a blow. Best candidate of the bunch IMHO.
I understand that he can do great things at the federal level, but we REALLY needed him here in California.

7. Meg Whitman reminds me of a succubus. You know, from South Park?
A demoness sent from Hell to devour the soul of men. Except instead of just the soul of men, she wants to feast on the soul of every Californian. I mean, don't you just see that possessed, bat-winged, red-eyed inner demon in her just waiting to burst out every time she speaks? She could be the anti-christ. That's all I'm saying.

4. I'll vote for him. No prob. I remind DUers...
of his principled stand as AG in opposing California proposition hate (8).
he lost before the Supreme Court, but took a good hard shot at getting 8
overturned, even though as the AG he was supposed to be defending it.

I'm good with Jerry Brown, even against Newsom (who needs seasoning.)
It will be a rough fight, though.

yes, he had smoked marijuana, but that he hadn't inhaled, Jerry Brown was telling us that he too smoked a little weed -- but that he never exhaled . . .

13. Dear Jerry Brown Supporters:
You want to explain this? (Thanks to DUer Newsmax for furnishing this. From the California forum.)

Poochigian confirmed to court (despite 'not qualified' ranking)

Source: Fresno Bee

SAN FRANCISCO -- A judicial commission on Thursday confirmed Chuck Poochigian as a state appeals court justice in Fresno, despite an unfavorable ranking by a state bar panel.

The 3-0 vote by the Commission on Judicial Appointments came after state Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald George criticized the state bar ranking, which had found Poochigian "not qualified" because of a lack of legal experience.

... The third vote came from Attorney General Jerry Brown, a Democrat who beat Poochigian in the 2006 attorney general's race. Brown, a former governor, said he deferred to the judgment of Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who nominated Poochigian for the job in August.

... The only witness speaking against Poochigian was Geoffrey Kors, executive director of Equality California, a gay-rights group. Kors criticized Poochigian's voting record, which included a 1999 vote against a bill passed into law that prohibits housing and employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

16. Very Lame. See post #4 . Brown and Newsom both have moxie on civil rights.
Newsom has heart, but smarts and experience not so much.

Brown was an excellent governor, better than his old man some think,
and I have a lot of respect for the old man (Edmond G Brown) too.

He came in after that fuck Reagan. God almighty, I had 16 years of that
asswipe! 16 years!!! Later 8 years of Bush. 24 years of my life. The Horror!
Dammit NEVER FUCKIN AGAIN!

Reagan, Then Jerry. God we needed him. Reagan took CA schools from THIRD
in the nation to FOURTYTHIRD, and closed down the state mental health
system. Patients were discharged and left on the street waiting for
relatives to pick them up. Jerry couldn't put humpty dumpty back together
again, state propositions defunded government AFTER REAGAN. Republifucks
have been wrecking government for a long time.

Jerry knows. He was there. He gets it. Newsom is a pretty boy with charisma
and damn little else. I LIVE IN THE BAY AREA. I like Newsom, just Jerry is wayy
better for gov. that's what I say.

So you Newsom fans, with all due respect, need to BACK THE FUCK UP and play nice
and fair, or dem blood will flow. And we need every drop to kick the crap out of
republicans. So lets have a nice clean contest. May the best man win.

Go Jerry.

17. What is lame is assuming you know who I'm backing . . .
if anyone. Thanks for the history lesson but I've been here 54 years and I'm pretty familiar with California politics. So, I ask again, explain the reason Jerry Brown deferred to Ahnold. Poochigian was deemed by the state Bar to be UNQUALIFIED for the court. Brown was in a position to oppose his appointment but didn't. I understand that Jerry Brown's Blind Supporters would rather I not bring this up but either he or his supporters need to explain this.

22. No.
And as one who has pretty consistently supported civil rights for the GBLT community, I ask again, why would Brown not TAKE THE BULLY PULPIT and oppose the nomination? The state Bar even gave his ass cover, but still, he defers to Ahnie. I'm still waiting for an explanation or are we going to play Round Three of Dodge-the-Question?

24. Legalized marijuana and JB will be on the ballot most likely
they both go down or they both go up together. I put my money on the latter because California wants change baby, real change. The emerging Latino vote does not like Newson's indiscretions, and contrary to the opinion of some, the latino demographic is bud tolerant. I predict sea change coming to CA

25. (head in hands)
OK, set aside Le Taz Hot's most excellent point for a moment. Let's also set aside the "No more political dynasties" issue. Let's even set aside the fact that he's already had this job. Look at Oakland and what he did not do for a city that has *so much* potential. Brown is a leader, no doubt, but he failed to lead Oaktown to a better place, and I have little faith that he'd do well leading this state out of the hole we're in right now.

30. "California Uber Alles"
I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles
And never frowns
Soon I will be president...

Carter Power will soon go away
I will be Fuhrer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school
Your kids will meditate in school!

California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Uber Alles California

Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face

Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro' on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay
Mellow out or you will pay!

Now it is 1984
Knock-knock at your front door
It's the suede/denim secret police
They have come for your uncool niece

Come quietly to the camp
You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp
Don't you worry, it's only a shower
For your clothes here's a pretty flower.

DIE on organic poison gas
Serpent's egg's already hatched
You will croak, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown
When you mess with President Brown

(BTW this post is not meant to be a atatement of any kind..I simply only know Jerry Brown by this song)
