Murdoch's Sun eclipses British PM Brown
Source: Reuters

BRIGHTON, England, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Britain's top-selling daily newspaper dealt a blow to Prime Minister Gordon Brown's efforts to win a general election, declaring on Wednesday it had switched its support to the opposition Conservatives.

The Sun, part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp (NWSA.O) media empire, delivered a damning thumbs-down the day after Brown's keynote speech to his ruling Labour Party conference.

"After 12 long years in power, this government has lost its way," the Sun said in a front-page article, featuring a picture of Brown and the headline "Labour's lost it".

The Sun boasts a circulation of more than 3 million and a record of backing winners in elections. It switched its support to Labour before Tony Blair led the party to the first of three successive election victories in 1997.

2. The only surprise is that it took Murdoch so long,
He always backs what he sees as the most likely conservative to succeed.

In 1997 it was Blair. Now it's Cameron.

3. One good point that was made in the UK forum about this...
...is that we can expect the Tories do make smashing up the BBC a priority in return for this.

7. Yes and both the RW press and the Tories loathe the BBC on principle
The fact that the BBC's output is of a much higher quality then it's rivals is not something that they care to be reminded of though.

The constant RW claims of BBC bias are horsesh*t too. Channel 4 News is way more left wing then the BBC but the right wing never makes any fuss about that for some reason.

If anything I'd complain more about the creeping RW bias in Metro then on the TV.

11. You know what's even more interesting.
Channel 4 news is actually produced by Sky News, and Sky News is owned by Robert Murdoch. (Which makes no sense.)

As for the BBC vs. the RW press and Tories, they probally hate the fact that public broadcasting, if funded well and maintained, actually raises the bar for programing even for the private sector. Basically they have real competition.

5. Fuck Murdoch and fuck the Sun.
I'm surprised they weren't supporting the Tories before. Probably took them this long to realize that Tory Blair has gone and his successor is slightly to his left.

They helped keep Maggie Thatcher in power, and now they'll help the Tories to fuck us up again - par for the course.
