City Councilman Compares Chants To Programming Hitler Youth

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A video that appeared on YouTube recently of Asheville students chanting "change has come" while talking about President Barack Obama has stirred up controversy.

The video features some students at Sand Hill-Veneable Elementary School during a performance about famous Americans. The entire program, which was performed in February, was 26 minutes long, but it's the last 55 seconds that are at the center of the debate.

Jan Blunt with the Buncombe County School district said that the program included skits and music about people like George Washington, Clara Bartan and Amelia Earhart. The program also included a chant about then newly-elected President Barack Obama.

...

However, Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower, compares the chants to the programming of children in Nazi Germany.

"That event was about chanting campaign slogans," Mumpower said. "There is a difference, a big difference. That is ritual behavior and that's how you plug things into kids' heads. I'll come right out and say it. That's exactly how the Hitler youth were programed prior to World War II."

...

FOX Carolina tracked down the man who posted the video on YouTube, which was titled "Liberal Indoctrination Camp," and had received more than 13,000 hits before he pulled it off the site on Tuesday afternoon.

"I only saw (and remember having access to only) the part that I posted and had no (or lazily did not take time to look for) other video by which to compare and take in context, so for that I am sorry," the poster said in a statement to FOX Carolina. "I think it is good to dialogue about the issue and have a good debate."

Blunt said that some of the parents of the students seen in the video are fearing for the safety of their children. She said that some of the teachers and parents have received hundreds of threatening e-mails and phone calls from people who call the program indoctrination.

22. Well, to be fair... this isn't the FOX Agitprop Channel
Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 09:09 PM by LTR
It's an affiliate owned by the Meredith Corporation. They just happen to carry FOX Network programming (like "American Idol" and all that stuff).

Something tells me that Mumpower would disagree with that, though

3. The insult implicit.
I'm pretty sure it did not take a mere 55 seconds to program the Hitler Youth.

But a Fox News audience might believe it because of how stupid they are.

21. It was a forgettable grade school play about "doing your best".Now its the latest calculated act of
brainwashing. We must guard against the insidious socialist conspiracy of self improvement, education and tolerance often associated with Obamaism.

8. In some states it is a crime to photo or video other folks kids. Because of the risk
that criminals will target them.

Someone should check to see if this guy...and Fox News...have broken the law.

Those emails and calls should be investigated and charges should be filed if these Republican fascist assholes are threatening anyone.

children should be taught, if anything, skepticism of politicians rather than loyalty.

I think our democracy will be harmed far less by an excess of skepticism rather than a dearth.

in which children are forced to recite a pledge to a piece of cloth that any fool can wave.

25. I went to liberal indoctrination camp, myself. It was called My Mother.
Who taught me to do things for other people. To treat people like I'd like to be treated. To respect other people's differences (my mother was the daughter of immigrants and had her share of feeling different). To help out people who were struggling. To be a good citizen.

Yep. She gave me a liberal indoctrination, but good. And I'll always love her for it.

28. People should use great caution when posting videos of their children on youtube
Especially when other people's children are involved.

Are these videos just now being posted? Are people suddenly remembering the assembly last year when little Johnny and Sue "chanted" their praises to the new president? And then rushing to get it posted? Or is Fox trolling the internet for what has been up for months?

29. I think it's both... in this case Fox Carolina tracked down the YouTuber
who posted this. From what I gather he saw all the faux outrage over the video from last week, and said "aha" I have a 50 second snippet I can post too. And then the RWers were alerted of this video which made it's way to Fox.

30. When I was in school Nancy Reagan was supposed to grace us with her presence
along with the "we don't have to take our cloths off" guy. She stood us up because the secret service had to take some dictators kids to Disneyland. Prior to her scheduled visit we were coached and forced to practice stupid anti-drug chants for the grand assembly.

What is the difference?

Ironically, the only reason this was an official "Drug Free School" is because the administration had NOT finding drugs down to an exact science.
