Muse tell Glenn Beck to retract endorsement
Source: Daily Telegraph

Beck, an outspoken conservative known for his caustic attacks on Barack Obama, praised a song on the band's new album The Resistance for warning against the dangers of "one world government".

Describing their music as "absolutely fantastic", Beck implied that the band members shared his concern about the centralisation of power by liberal politicians.

He repeatedly compared the lyrics of United States of Eurasia to George Orwell's anti-totalitarian novel 1984, in which the world is divided into three superstates including Eurasia.

"These guys are brilliant, they know the time that we live in. They are libertarians from England," he said on his nationally syndicated talk radio show, The Glenn Beck Program.

Clearly Beck is a man with selective hearing.

Anyway, at least Muse showed some sense. I've been into Muse from before they were even signed and their lyrics are hardly RW screeds.

2. Just so you know what's Beck's blathering on about
Edited on Mon Oct-05-09 07:45 AM by T_i_B
here are the lyrics to United States of Eurasia. It's hardly an anti-Obama rant. Faux news must be getting desperate if they feel the need to distort anti-war lyrics.

MK Ultra's the best track on the new Muse CD anyway.

http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/m/muse/united_states_of_eurasia.html

You and me are the same
We don't know or care who's to blame
But we know that whoever holds the reins
Nothing will change
Our cause has gone insane

And these wars, they can't be won
And these wars, they can't be won
And do you want them to go on
And on and on
Why split these states
When there can be only one?

And must we do as we're told?
Must we do as we're told?

You and me fall in line
To be punished for unproven crimes!
And we know that there is no one we can trust;
Our ancient heroes, they are turning to dust!

And these wars, they can't be won
Does anyone know or care how they begun?
They just promise to go on
And on and on
But soon we will see
There can be only one

United States!
United States!
Of...

Eurasia!
... sia!
... sia!
... sia!

Eurasia!
... sia!
... sia!
... sia!

Eurasia!
... sia!
... sia!
... sia!

3. Beck has gotten too big for his britches
It's amazing to me that he has the following he does--whether they're listening to him in agreement or astonished disagreement, he is a flash in the pan phenomenon for the moment. And not just in the US--it's weird that a rep for an obscure band in Britain could be listening and contemporaneoulsy call during a show and comment on something Beck said.

And his ratings situation is so paradoxical--his numbers are on the one hand sky rocketing, but on the other hand because of all the attention advertisers are pulling away. I think it's a wash for Fox at present--pulling advertisers from his show alone is not enough because of the way they sign them up. The only way to really hurt him is to pull the advertisers off Fox completely, not just off his show.

4. They aren't that obscure
Muse are a stadium rock act who've had a fair bit of commercial success.

Maybe it's a bit obscure for the sort of old farts who like RW commentators but then again you get the impression that such people still haven't got over the Beatles.

19. They are big everywhere but the US
They fill stadiums all over the world but have never made it big in the United States due to their non-mainstream sound and our crappy music machine.

Here is a clip of their Wembley gig which sold out two nights @ 70k people in less than an hour.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8WP7aOD_9Q

And yes, they are far and away my favorite band. :D

http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/435684/uprising-live.jhtml

Lyrics for Uprising

Paranoia is in bloom,
The PR transmissions will resume,
They'll try to push drugs that keep us all dumbed down,
And hope that we will never see the truth around
(So come on)
Another promise, another scene,
Another packaged lie to keep us trapped in greed,
And all the green belts wrapped around our minds,
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined
(So come on)

They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious
(So come on)

Interchanging mind control,
Come let the revolution take it's toll,
If you could flick a switch and open your third eye,
You'd see that
We should never be afraid to die
(So come on)

Rise up and take the power back,
It's time the fat cats had a heart attack,
You know that their time's coming to an end,
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend

They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious

...it was at a small upstairs bar in Chelmsford, and there were only 15 people watching (including support acts). Let's just say that they were totally awesome!

To be honest I find the new album a bit over-indulgent but there's still a few real good 'uns on there.

They really rocked down the house at IU. I was very impressed with them and their musicianship. Sorry to say I have read interviews with the lead singer and he is into all kinds of wacky conspiracy theories. He believes in the 9/11 conspiracy theory that has been debunked over and over again by publications like Popular Mechanics.

Every supposed debunking also has a dubunking response. So what we need is a real investigation. I'm convinced of LIHOP at least; no way our defenses would be down that much, and there was the Project For The New American Century - ignoring an attack fit the neocons' plans well.

or not I am not sure either. But Alex Jones is not the guy you want carrying your torch for you. He makes any legitimate questions about 9/11 or any other subject into a sideshow and you can't take anything he says seriously, which is too bad because some of his subject matter raises legit questions.

32. I wonder what the rep for Muse REALLY asked Beck to do
Beck sarcastically says he was asked to retract his "endorsement". That doesn't seem likely to me. Why would someone in the business of promoting a group say something like that? It seems more likely to me that the rep took issue with the way Beck characterized the group's message, and asked for a correction of that, and a retraction of the mis-characterization. He has a perfect right to do that if he feels that something false has been said about his client. But it seems ludicrous that a promoter would tell somebody, especially one with Beck's audience numbers, to stop saying he likes the music.

39. Maybe he was thinking of the MC5's American Ruse
They told you in school about freedom
But when you try to be free they never let ya
They said "it's easy , nothing to it"
And now the army's out to get ya
Sixty nine America in terminal stasis
The air's so thick it's like drowning in molasses
I'm sick and tired of paying these dues
And i'm finally getting hip to the American ruse

I learned to say the pledge of allegiance
Before they beat me bloody down at the station
They haven't got a word out of me since
I got a billion years probation

Sixty nine America in terminal stasis
The air's so thick it's like drowning in molasses
I'm sick and tired of paying these dues
And i'm sick to my guts of the American ruse
Phony stars, oh no! crummy cars, oh no!
Cheap guitars, oh no! Joe's primitive bar... nah!

Rock'em back, Sonic !
The way they pull you over it's suspicious
Yeah, for something that just ain't your fault
If you complain they're gonna get vicious
Kick in the teeth and charge you with assault
Yeah, but i can see the chickens coming home to roost
Young people everywhere are gonna cook their goose
Lots of kids are working to get rid of these blues
cause everybody's sick of the American ruse

Well well well , take a look around !
Well well well , take a look around !
Well well well , take a look around !
Well well well , take a look around !
Well well well , take a look around !
