RNC insurance plan covers abortion
Source: Politico

The Republican National Committee’s health insurance plan covers elective abortion – a procedure the party’s own platform calls “a fundamental assault on innocent human life.”

Federal Election Commission Records show the RNC purchases its insurance from Cigna. Two sales agents for the company said that the RNC’s policy covers elective abortion.

Informed of the coverage, RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho told POLITICO that the policy pre-dates the tenure of current RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

“The current policy has been in effect since 1991, and we are taking steps to address the issue,” Gitcho said.

2. Apparently in 1991 the Republican party was not opposed to elective abortions. ( n/t )

6. This is also a barometer of how right-wing BOTH parties have become
Edited on Thu Nov-12-09 06:21 PM by Zodiak
Yeah, the Republicans screwed up their platform...big deal, they don't count on their voters to read.

But effectively, our party isn't doing a great job of supporting this aspect of the Republican platform, either, and that is profoundly sad and disturbing.

8. I really wouldn't make much of that
The RNC is located in Washington, D.C., and I would doubt that any health insurance providers located there offer policies without abortion coverage. I couldn't find any links, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it were required in insurance policies, I think that applies in a number of blue states.

10. In that case
They should join the ranks of the uninsured since their hallowed dollars are being spent to fund abortions. :sarcasm:

16. While that sounds fittingly proper
many people who don't want to fund abortions live in places where they do so. They're piggybacking on the Stupak amendment to stop having to do so, if we get universal HCR.

That's what happens when you try to make a policy national, rather than regional.

17. The RNC is a large enough employer that they could find an insurer
that will build them a custom benefit.

If they were serious about this, they surely could have found such a policy in the last 18 years.

20. My prediction is, if it's legally allowed
they will indeed find one.

I think this just slipped through the cracks, most people pay more attention to exclusions when they read a policy, they don't really think about what is included that is not specifically mentioned. Even if it was mentioned, it would have been ignored. My lady has a policy that has certain benefits spelled out for maternity, since she's past the age of menopause, and I've had a vasectomy for a quarter century, neither of us really would have paid it much attention.

Again, it might be that the District of Columbia has some sort of insurance commissioner who sets the rules on what health insurance companies must cover, I'd be willing to bet that abortion coverage is probably mandatory. Let's face it, come Presidential Election Day, is there any place bluer than the D. C.?

18. This is major ammo for the 2010 -2012 elections. I can't really even see abortion being much of
an issue after this.

Seriously, how could anyone take them seriously now after they've been paying for/having abortions this whole time?

19. Would be hilarious if it wasn't so pitifully hypocritical and dishonest --
And what about Congress' health care . . . do we know what's in those plans??

Should we bar Congress from covering themselves with abortion insurance????
