2 guards shot in Las Vegas federal building

By KEN RITTER
Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- At least two U.S. marshals were wounded Monday when a gunman opened fire in the lobby of a federal building in downtown Las Vegas, and the gunman was shot and apprehended at a building across the street, authorities said.

"We have two marshals down and a suspect in custody," Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Roxanna Lea Irwin said after the shooting ended at about 8 a.m.

Police and federal agents swarmed the multi-story building, and paramedics wheeled at least two people out and down a ramp to ambulances. There was no immediate word on the identity of the wounded shooter.

Las Vegas police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said the shooter had been shot in the head and apprehended near the federal building.

Pity he felt the need to shoot at others while doing so.

Hopefully, the marshalls will be OK.

7. WOW
The story is only a few hours old and you have determined this was 'suicide by cop'?

You are awesome.

4. Sure a good thing the cops had guns!
They were SO able to prevent tragedy. Another case for why everyone should be packin'!

6. Lets have fun with your intentionally ridiculous argument.
How many more innocent people would be dead if the cops didn't have guns?

11. Since we don't know the details - we can't have "fun".
My comment wasn't aimed at the incident. It was aimed at the reason-shy notion that if you're packin', you're safer. Tell those two cops that - er one cop.

20. They were safer.
And so was everyone that wasn't shot because the cops were armed.

24. Yeah - whatever
When you're armed, you're wearing an unseen bullseye. My earlier qualifier was unseen as well. That's the sort of "logic" that prevails anymore - see what you wanna see - hear what you wanna hear.

These two were officers. It's part of their duties as public protectors to wear a gun right out where it can be seen. Now, draw up a scenario where regular citizens had guns on their persons in this incident and decided to join the fray - justified or not. With a hail of bullets flyin', can't you JUST SEE one of the officers whippin' out his whistle to call for a halt while the bad guys and the good guys identify themselves, so they all know who's who.??? Oh yeah! :sarcasm:

17. strawmen much?
so me where RKBA advocates say that EVERYONE should be packing. this is the "arm everyone" canard that is so popular amongst those who want to restrict our civil rights (see also: penis canard, need canard, etc.).

and as a police officer and firearms instructor i have never heard anybody say that carrying a gun always prevents tragedy. sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

5. Court officer killed, federal marshal wounded in shooting inside lobby of Las Vegas courthouse
. . .

The man fled across the street in a hail of return gunfire. He was shot in the head and killed.

The large modern building, which also houses the offices of Nevada Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign, was evacuated amid confused witness accounts of up to three other gunmen.

"We are clearing the entire building at this time," FBI Special Agent Joseph Dickey.
It was later determined the gunman was alone.

A Las Vegas resident took a dramatic iPhone video outside the building that captured the sound of a lengthy fusillade of bullets that sounded more like a fireworks show than a gunfight.

"Hell of a morning for jury duty," the cameraman says in a shaky voice. He posted the video to YouTube.

<snip>

The courthouse on the famous Las Vegas Boulevard is home to bankruptcy hearings as well as federal criminal proceedings. The nation's economic woes have hit Las Vegas particularly hard.

25. But in this case, The Stranger was wrong
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 10:35 AM by slackmaster
WASHINGTON (AP) — Law enforcement officials say the suspect in the Las Vegas shooting at a federal building was upset over losing a lawsuit over his Social Security benefits.

The two officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case, say Johnny Lee Wicks is the man who opened fire at a security checkpoint Monday morning and was shot dead in a gunfight with deputy U.S. marshals.

While the investigation is still under way, the officials say the early evidence points to the man's anger over his benefits case as the motive for the shooting.

Court records show Wicks had sued the Social Security Administration in 2008, but the case was thrown out and formally closed in September 2009.

26. That's cute.
But, thankfully, it isn't one of these Right Wing nuts spawned by the Right Wing hate radio 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Hopefully, the hanging of the President in effigy, and the storing of weapons in "churches," the stealing of concentration camp history, preachers' citing to bible passages cryptically calling for followers to the "end" the Obama presidency -- I could go on and on, but you have access to the LBN boards, so you should know about these things -- hopefully, all of this will just pass us all by peacefully.

23. Looks like a disgruntled retiree
The man who allegedly shot and killed a security officer and wounded a U.S. Marshal today in an early morning shootout at the federal courthouse in Las Vegas had sued the Social Security Administration for "race discrimination," claiming his benefits were unfairly reduced.
