Iowa Computer Breach Points to China

DES MOINES (AP) - Iowa investigators believe a serious breach of a state computer database can be traced to China, but they acknowledge that hackers disguise their digital footprints.

Hackers gained access to the system operated by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission last week.

Administrator Jack Ketterer says the breach allowed access to personal information of about 80,000 people, primarily current and former casino and racing employees. Letters advising people of the security breach were to be mailed on Tuesday.

2. How was it breached?!
Edited on Tue Feb-02-10 03:50 PM by bc3000
I don't think we'd be content to just know "there was a breach" without knowing how the intruders entered if there was a physical breach. Can you imagine someone saying "intruders broke into the state capital and stole private documents" without the inevitable follow up questions: "How did they get in?" and "Who was responsibly for security?"

Yet with computers that question either goes unasked or unanswered.

But not only does it go unanswered, we allow state investigators to implicate a foreign government without even asking for evidence? Any evidence at all?

"Iowa Computer Breach Points to China". No, Administrator Jack Ketterer points to the Chinese. Was this guy the one responsible for the lack of security that led to the breach in the first place? Now he's a security expert? Now he's qualified to implicate foreign governments in espionage because he saw a Chinese IP address in his logs?

3. Could be anybody at this point.
"...but they acknowledge that hackers disguise their digital footprints."

Could fake it to be the Chinese since they're the boogy-man of the moment...
